===== But Cody, why should I listen to you?? =====

I taught myself XHTML, CSS, and PHP and have been building websites professionally since 2006.

I quit my office job as an Administrative Assistant in 2007 to pursue my side gig full-time. I started from scratch with web design (I had no formal education in technology OR design) and grew and built it to the point where I could move abroad and travel the world FULL-TIME… and have since built an online community with my sites Thrilling Heroics and Digital Nomad Academy where I get to help others achieve similar success through marketing consulting, helping small businesses with their product launches online, personal career coaching and mentoring, and simply writing and sharing my passions with the world!

I literally started with less than a thousand dollars in my bank account and now I've worked with hundreds of amazing people, been a part of dozens of empowering and fun projects, I've coached and directly helped dozens of people to start new businesses and new lives as self-employed successes… and I've lived in 5 countries around the globe along the way! :)

===== Don't just take my word for it… Here's what some of my students say =====

"Seems I owe you a decent gin at least as reading your site has led me to getting a few small businesses together for myself."

–David McGrail

"Cody my man, you have been a freaking ANGEL sent right from heaven to me bro and I'm not kidding about it."

–Sergio Felix

"I have to tell you, you have opened my eyes to what is possible and our life will never be the same again. I now have a strong foundation and am concentrating on what I believe will be some monumental wins in the next year. When I started out, the online business world seemed like a murky, incongruent, frustrating mess. Now, I can see a very bright light at the end of the tunnel." –Tim Juliussen

"Cody McKibben is amazing. An inspiring entrepreneur/world traveler and blogger who has helped me a ton with pursuing my passions. A great person to follow, especially if you want to enter into the blogging world, start your own business and lead an unconventional life where you're following your passions and are your own boss." –Emelina Minero

"Cody McKibben isn’t your ordinary freelancer."

"Cody started out as a typical person with a regular job who decided to leave all of that behind him, including his native country, the US. He’s been doing this for the last five years and now he helps other people understand the benefits of a digital nomad lifestyle and achieve their dreams of escaping the shackles of living in one place and being bound by a 9 to 5 job."

"Cody is on a mission to show people how to lead different lives and break free from the traditional working routine." –Transitions Abroad

"He’s an archetype of the digital age and the never-before-possible lifestyle opportunities that the internet provides." –Nicholas Tart, 14clicks

The first thing you need is a domain name. There are many domain registras where you can purchase a domain name from. This video will walk you through how to purchase a domain name from GoDaddy.com. I also like to use Namecheap.com.

Recommended Domain Registrars:

05:13

Next, you’re going to need a hosting provider to host your webpages. This video will show you how to obtain a hosting provider from Hostgator – a popular and affordable hosting provider.

Recommended Web Hosts:

01:47

Once you’ve obtained a domain name and signed up for a webhost, its time to link them together so that when someone types your domain name into their browser, they will access the files on your web hosting provider.

The next few videos will show you how to transfer webpages and other files that you create on your computer to your webhost. We are using Filezilla as the FTP software in this example because it is a free software and works with both Windows and Macs. Almost all the other FTP software will work in the same way.

Here is a step-by-step video on How to Download & Install Filezilla.

Recommended FTP Programs:

Recommended FTP Software:

02:13

The cPanel dashboard provided by your web host is the way you manage your website. cPanel allows to you create email accounts under your domain, manage files, install applications like WordPress and forums and a host of other options.

Access to cPanel:

The access to your cPanel is provided by your web host after your sign up.

Typically, you will get an email with the URL to access your cPanel, a username and a password. In that same email, you should also be provided with a default FTP account and password.

If you need assistance with your cPanel access, contact the support center from your web host.

02:18

Having an email address with your own domain like yourname@yourdomain.com is a lot more professional than using free email services like Gmail. This video series will show you how to set up and manage email accounts under your own domain name.

Here is a step-by step video on Creating Email Accounts in cPanel.

cPanel has a built in File Manager that allows you to manage files between your computer and your web host. The functions of the File Manager is the same as your FTP Software like Filezilla. However, if you are familiar with File Manager in cPanel, you can manage your files directly on any computer without needing to download FileZilla first.

Here is an Introduction to File Manager in cPanel.

Here is a step-by-step video on Compressing Files with File Manager in cPanel

Here is a step-by-step video on Editing File Permissions with File Manager in cPanel

02:48

Here is a step-by-step video on Uploading Files with File Manager in cPanel

04:03

There may be times when you want to engage a freelance coder to work on your websites. In such a case, you want to allow limited access to your web host but not give away your main FTP account. This video will show you how to create and manage FTP accounts to allow other users to access your web host.

03:51

This video shows you how to change the file index settings in cPanel to prevent unauthorized access to the files in the folders on your web host.

03:23

If you wish to install certain hosted applications like WordPress or user forums, you may be required to install a MySQL database and use the database name, user login and password to complete the installation of your hosted application.

This is actually a very simple thing to do and this video will show you how. Now you never need to worry about getting a programmer to install hosted software on your web host.

03:11

This video shows you how to create password protected directories on your web host. Once a directory is protected, when someone tries to access any link to a file inside this directory, they will need to enter a username and password in order to proceed.

04:03

Affiliate links normally contain the product purchase page together with an appended affiliate identifier. These links are very obvious and users can sometimes bypass your affiliate link by just copying the non-affiliate portion of your link. This video shows you a simple way to hide your affiliate links by using a redirect link that you can create using cPanel.

02:17

If you have a lot of content on your website, a sub-domains can help you to segregate the content within your main domain. For example, you could create a sub-domain like http://blog.yourdomain.com to link to all your blog content. This gives you a short URL that your site visitors will intuitively understand is a separate section within your website.

03:14

An addon domain allows you to host several domain names within a single web hosting provider. Many web hosts like Hostgator and BlueHost allow you to host unlimited number of addon domains within a single hosting account. Mind you, these domains will share the bandwidth of your hosting package.

Typically, I would have one main domain and add many addon domains as my business grows. When a particular domain starts getting a lot of traffic, I would then purchase additional hosting to cater for it.

03:15

The cPanel Backup Wizard allows you to backup your entire content in your web hosting account. This backup will save your WordPress blog, your email settings and emails, all directories and files inside your account as well as your MySQL databases as well. This is very useful to keep a complete copy of your website in case something goes wrong and also if you need to migrate to another hosting provider for example.

Section 2: Wordpress Step-by-Step
03:41

03:38

WordPress is a content management system. When you create a new post or page, it will automatically give the page a name. By default, its a sequential number which does not give the reader much information and is also not ideal for search engines to identify the post or page content.

So one of the first and most important things to do before you start building content is to tell WordPress how it should name the links to your posts and pages. The ideal setting is to default the name to the post or page title.

Now WordPress has incorporated the featured image and most of the latest WordPress themes would have the option to upload and define a featured image for each post.

06:01

Whenever there are new versions of WordPress, you will see a notice at the top of your WordPress Dashboard. It’s recommended to always have the latest version of WordPress, especially if there have been security enhancements. This and the following video will show you how upgrade your blog automatically via the WordPress Dashboard or manually via cPanel. Again, for most users, the automatic upgrade is the recommended route and the manual upgrade is provided here for reference only.

Instructor Biography

Cody McKibben, Chief Adventurer at Thrilling Heroics

Professionally, I am an Online Business Startup Coach & Digital Product Launch Advisor, an experienced online marketer, writer, WordPress tinkerer and web developer, among many other things. I wear way too many hats, but my greatest skills are connecting incredibly creative people, advocating for new ideas, and building strong, engaged online communities around those ideas.

I'm proud to be a digital nomad and lifestyle designer – in 2007, I started my own web-based freelance business, developed client relationships on five continents, and in 2008 I decided to experiment with location independence, to move and live abroad, and continue to build and run my online business, location-independent from anywhere in the world. Originally from California, I've adopted a permanent traveler lifestyle and have now slow traveled around the world to over 28 countries, living and working on the islands of Koh Phangan and Bali, the beaches of Krabi, the big city metropolises of Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Saigon, in the mountains of Chiang Mai, then in the Philippines, and now Chile and South America… You can follow some of my adventures and entrepreneurial advice at Thrilling Heroics.

Now my passion is helping others design unconventional lifestyles for themselves and build remarkable businesses that allow them to incorporate adventure, travel, entrepreneurship, giving & fun into their lives! Currently I mentor and consult with over 250 virtual business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs inside Digital Nomad Academy, building new lifestyle business startups, creating new communities, and launching new products & resources.

In the past 6 years I've also helped develop South East Asia Backpacker Magazine, SovereignMan.com, ChrisDucker.com, Untemplater.com, In Search Of Sanuk, and been involved in running the Bangkok Tweetup and TEDx BKK—projects that have been featured by BBC Capital, FreelanceSwitch, Huffington Post, the New York Times, ABC News, Transitions Abroad, the Washington Post, CNN Travel and more.
