The founder and main mentor of Godalkanje, academic musician Bojan Cvetrežnik, lacked knowledge unobtainable through formal music education. Since 2010, many top-level experts in various bowed string styles from different countries have participated in Godalkanje as mentors. Bojan’s work has moved in both directions — introducing diversity into the world of classical violin, while also bringing the rich heritage of classical technique into the world of fiddle styles.
Ten years later, the first ‘Balkan Fiddle Gate’ masterclass took place in Kamnik, the hometown of the first Godalkanje Summercamp — a unique event in the European context. It brought together outstanding musicians from seven countries. The story had come full circle: from a country once known for its lack of diversity in music education, a handful of individuals convinced the international music community that Slovenia now offers a level of education that serves as an example even in countries with much longer traditions.
Bojan Cvetrežnik and Barja Drnovšek have been invited to teach as mentors in several European countries (Ireland, Spain, England, Germany, Belgium). Meanwhile, the first generation of Godalkanje students has grown into a full-fledged performing ensemble — the Slovenian Fiddle Gang — which has received strong praise, particularly from professional circles.
