Course Description

This complete charcoal drawing course provides you with the 12 powerful but easy to learn techniques you need to create realistic drawings in charcoal, taking you from your first tentative fine lines in charcoal right through to creating your own fully rendered confident self portrait.

The course starts with the basic fundamental techniques and builds step-by-step towards your final portrait project. Once you have mastered the quick and easy techniques in this course you will be able to combine them to create a wide range of textures and draw all kinds of things.

This course contains a complete downloadable copy of Cindy Widers '12 Charcoal Techniques' book which contains the reference images used in the exercises. Step-by-step videos support the content of the book. Alternatively you can read and download the relevant individual parts of the book then watch the step by step videos as you progress through the course.

To complete the course you will need some basic charcoal drawing supplies which are described in the course materials and are readily available from art shops or from online art stores. A printer is also useful to print the course pdfs containing step-by-step instructions and reference photos from which you will be measuring.

The course is conveniently divided into five separate weeks of study. Students generally take around 20 to 25 hours to complete the course so you can complete it with approximately 5 hours study per week (of course you can go faster or slower if you want).

Course Outline:

Week One

  • Create a pre-instruction drawing
  • Practice the Twelve Charcoal Techniques

Week Two

Weeks Four and Five - Begin your portrait project:

  • Take a photograph of yourself and use a step-by-step process to draw your own self-portrait. Alternatively you can draw the portrait image provided.

Expand your creativity beyond the pencil and experience the joy, freedom and expressiveness of Charcoal drawing.

If you want to experience the joy, freedom and unlimited creative drawing possibilities that charcoal offers then 12 Charcoal Drawing Techniques will open up a whole new world of artistic expression for you.

What are the requirements?

  • You will need some charcoal drawing supplies which are easy to source from your local art supplies store or online. A printer will also be useful if you wish to print the pdf's provided. Instructor Biography

Cindy Wider, Art Educator, Artist and Co-Founder of DrawPj.com

Hi, I'm a professional artist and art educator with more than 24 years of experience in the art industry. I've helped thousands of people realise their dreams of being able to draw and paint both in live settings and through my online courses.

I'm the Co-Founder of DrawPj.com, which is home to my CPD accredited "Complete Drawing and Painting Certificate Course" presented through a group of my devoted andhighly skilled instructors. I have been teaching online since 2009 and prior to that I co-founded StuartCindy Art with my husband Stuart Wider which grew quickly at the time to become the largest privately owned live art tuition school on the Queensland Sunshine Coast, Australia.

I'm also the author of the soft cover books 'Paint In Your Pyjamas - every woman's guide to finding your life purpose through art', 'Six Pencil Techniques' and co-author of 'Action Painting Workshop' with Stuart Wider. Many of my step by step tutorials and various articles have been published in magazines and soft cover books including; Leisure Painter (The UK’s best-selling art magazine),Ann Kullberg's 'Draw Portraits in Coloured Pencil', 'Color' magazine and I also have a popular tutorial on her website tited 'Ultimate Guide To Drawing An Eye'.

As a professional artist I've sold more than 350 paintings and drawings through galleries and art shows to both private and corporate collectors. I've been commissioned by major corporations including Microsoft Australia. My art has been been shown  through many solo and touring exhibitions throughout Australia.

I have discovered that motivated students using my course curriculum over the internet will often equal or surpass the standard of work created in a live tuition setting. I find this exciting and rewarding as time and again I hear course participants confess to me that they 'can't even draw a straight line' but with hard work and dedication they are able to improve their drawing skills in a very short space of time and often with dramatic results.
