While we are under parental care we are driven to learn behaviours that give us the best chance of survival. It’s a very primitive drive based on the caveman days where if our parents didn’t bond with us we would die.
These days it’s more complex of course.
As a therapist and a person who experienced an abusive childhood, I am very aware how easy it is to screw up our kids – without even trying! I certainly know that I was very worried about the effect my upbringing would have when I had to be a parent myself.
There is no right or wrong answer to parenting. We all do our best. It's just that sometimes we aren't aware of the consequences of what we do.
Through my role as a Cognitive Hypnotherapist I get to see the consequences.
In this course what I have tried to do is give you some simple and practical techniques to bring up your kids in a way that makes them resilient enough to cope with whatever life throws at them
What I hope is that through these techniques you can do as much as possible to stop your kids ending up on a couch to seek help from someone like me one day!
In this module you will learn why we seek to be loved as children.
You will learn how we make a connection between moments in our childhood and what they mean. Particularly moments that are connected to love.
You will then learn how you can influence the meaning of those moments in a positive way so that they don't become unnecessarily connected to love and impact on our behaviours and beliefs as adults.
In this module you will learn about what a fear is and what the point of it is
We will cover why it is important that you don't try to rationalise the fear away with your kid
We will then cover some simple techniques you can use to help your kids overcome any fears they might have. These techniques will give them resilience to deal with their own fears and will help right through into their adult life
In this module we learn the sort of behaviours that kids get stuck in
We will then cover how to turn it around on them to change their perspective and their behaviour without anyone losing their temper
In this module we will spend some time understanding how we see the world as adults and what informs that.
From that we will look some behaviours that limit us as adults and how they are formed by looking at a couple of case studies
Then we will cover the big thing – how do you teach your kids resilient behaviour when you might not be able to do it yourself!
When you have completed this lesson, grab the MP3 download from the supplementary material. This download will help you get better at the "Flip it" exercise which you can then teach to your kids. Listen to it every day, preferably at a time where you are able to relax. Don't listen while driving or doing anything that requires concentration.
A summary of the course
Dawn is a Cognitive Hypnotherapist with a practice in Scotland, UK.
Because she wants everyone to be able to experience change she uses the internet to get the benefits of Cognitive Hypnotherapy to as wide an audience as possible. Using Skype and Facetime for 1-1 conversations, YouTube video clips and a whole range of MP3 downloads for problems such as anxiety, colds and exam nerves, she is on a mission to remove the geographical boundaries of therapy and make it available to everyone.
