Jen Fagan Simonsen
Outdoor Learning through Play Consultant
About me
With over 20 of experience in early childhood education, Jen Fagan Simonsen is dedicated to promoting the benefits of outdoor learning through play and nature-based pedagogy.
Jen has always had a huge love for animals and preferred the countryside and a quiet hike up a hill over a busy city tour- nature calms her and helps recharge her batteries.
Jen has a bachelor of education from the INHOLLAND university in Rotterdam, specialised in Early Childhood, studied education in Czech Republic and Spain and worked in Danish and International kindergartens and schools around Europe.
It was during covid that she noticed a huge change in her Early Years class and herself during outdoor learning days. The pace was slower and she noticed how the children did not miss all the classroom toys and loved spending time exploring the outdoors.
Going back to indoor learning made way for opportunities to host workshops for the International Curriculum Association on Remote Learning, Covid Schooling and Recording & Reflecting in the Early Years.
But Jen kept thinking about outdoor learning through play and started working in a Danish forest kindergarten with real nature pedagogy- Child Led Outdoor Learning Through Play.
This inspired Jen write an outdoor play curriculum for the IEYC and start up her own small bilingual outdoor daycare.
After moving to Jutland to work as the Head of Kindergarten at an International School, Jen realised she needed to get back in touch with nature. She wrote, illustrated and published OUT! Nature Journal for children and founded INTO the OUT dk, a company with a mission to support anyone working with learners to improve outdoor learning through play.
Into the Out is committed to reimagining the way we connect with nature and engage with our surroundings to create a brighter future.
Inspiring individuals, communities, and organisations to embrace outdoor learning through play as pathways to personal growth and environmental stewardship.
What may initially seem like a distant dream has the power to ignite our imagination and unveil innovative solutions to pressing challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and mental health issues.
Taking the time to envision a better world is a practice too often neglected in our fast-paced lives. I invite you to explore how Into the Out can connect people and nature.
Jen runs workshops for teachers and pedagogues wanting to improve their understanding and implementation of Outdoor Learning through Play and consults schools and kindergartens around the world.
Jen continues to inspire and educate those passionate about connecting children with nature.
