Are You a Good Public Speaker?
1 question
04:13

I would like to share with you what you can expect from this course and help you to understand the framework of the course.

The course has been created in Five Steps with a Case Study as Step 6.

Every one of the Five Steps has an Activity for you to complete so that you can create your own speech or presentation.

There are downloadable resources, checklists and templates to help you along the way.

In addition, at the end of the course, you will find a detailed CheckList covering the whole course.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

Section 2: Setting You Up for Success
01:53

As an introduction to this section, I would like to share with you what you can expect to discover. By the end of this section, you will have created an initial draft of your topic, which we can then refine as the course goes on.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

04:14

I want to start this course by making sure we all get off on the right foot so in this lecture I explain some of the key elements which comprise a successful presentation. This is not a list of do's and don't's but a broader conceptual sharing of my philosophy about public speaking and I want to bring you along with me.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

Which of These Is Characteristic of A Good Presentation?
1 question
03:56

Before you consider speaking in public, you need to spend some time understanding who you are going to be speaking to. Addressing their needs is the first step to creating an engaging and effective presentation. If your speech is all about you, they will become very bored, very quickly. As few of us are a Robin Williams, we are just not going to be that interesting. So work with me here and spend some time discovering how you can address the needs of those to whom you are going to be speaking.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

04:13

There are three types of learners - and you will have all of them in your audience, so you need to be able to address the learning needs of them all if you are going to be an effective communicator. I want to make you aware of them now so that you frame your presentation with all of them in mind.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

02:28

I want you to understand my starting point for the speech that I am going to be developing with you, taking you through its transformation from a rudimentary list to something much more deliberately structured for my audience. I have included the original outline of my speech so that you can see where it all started. The PDF is included as an additional resource to this lecture and is downloadable.

01:50

This is the first activity for your course. I was going to leave you to outline on a blank sheet but I have included a template for you to download, one that asks you to answer some important questions before you outline your course which is what this Activity is all about. The template is included as an additional resource with this lecture.

Section 3: Creating the Structural Framework of a Great Presentation
00:54

In this section you will discover how to structure your presentation so that you are able to deliver your content in a way which your audience will be able to easily understand and follow. This will not be the finished article but you will have the outline of a great speech in your hands.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

04:39

Every speech or presentation tells a story and needs to have a narrative. I want to persuade you that your presentation will be much more effective if you take this approach. In this lecture, I explain the somewhat '"theatrical" approach I like to take as this helps me to deliver much more engaging speeches and presentations. Join me in this philosophy and enjoy engaging with your audience.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:03

This is one of the oldest theatrical devices but it works. Don't knock it. Even Steve Jobs used the this three part structure in all his presentations. I explain why it works and why its important for you to build this into the structure of your presentation.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

1 question

This quiz address the important issue of structure. The best speeches have a clear structure and as a result are much easier to follow.

04:08

Now we are going to add some more depth to our speech's structure and create a "road map" that you are going to follow. I am going to provide you with the detailed structure for this and you will need to take your draft outline from the previous section and recast the content to follow this structure. I have attached a template for you to work with in the additional resources section of this lecture.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

04:27

Now to add further depth to your presentation/speech, I want you to consider how you can introduce protagonists. In this lecture I explain several ways for you to do this. Every story needs a hero and an anti-hero and you need to be able to demonstrate the success of the first in contrast with the failure of the second.

There is an amended template included in this lecture for you to bring this into the scope of your presentation.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:30

To keep the coherence of the structure of your speech or presentation, each Key Message has three parts to it and each of these three parts must connect with one another. in this presentation, I have explained how you can do this.

03:40

A good speech or presentation must have a strong impactful opening and an equally strong close. In this lecture I explain why this is important and show you how to achieve this.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:19

It is now time for you to use the final version of the PDF to create your own road map for your presentation. I explain all the elements again.

If you would like to share any of these with the course or with me, by all mean start a discussion thread here in the course and I will take a look at what you have created and comment on it.

Section 4: Six Techniques Employed by Excellent Speakers - And You Can Too!
02:14

This lecture introduces this section where I want to move with you from the pure content of your speech to some more advanced techniques to help you to deliver a more rounded and engaging presentation.

02:00

A good presenter is him/her self and in this lecture I want to encourage you to have your own sense of style!

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

04:10

The Headline or title for your presentation is a critical component as it attracts your audience to come and listen to what you have to say so we need to spend a little time getting it right. This lecture explains some of the key principles and then you can craft your own headline in the activity that follows this lecture.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

1 question

Lets take a closer look at what makes a good title for a speech or a presentation...

01:30

Now its time for you to work on your headline. Down load the PDF which is included in the additional resources. I have provided 40 real life examples of presentation titles to inspire you. Use the PDF to brainstorm some amazing titles for your presentation and write them down.

03:44

Establishing a rapport with you Audience is a very important part of speaking in public. You need to make a connection with them and this lecture explains some of the techniques you can use to do this.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:23

We are talking Audience Attention Spans here. Your audience's attention will start to drift after 10 minutes and you need to have a mechanism in your presentation to re-set their attention span for the next 10 minute slot. This is the 10 minute rule and I share with you how it works so that you can keep your audience fully engaged.

Road Map 4 PDF is attached to this lecture which now incorporates the 10 minute rule into your presentation.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

1 question

This reinforces the importance of understanding the 10 minute rule!

01:57

This is a great technique for ending a presentation or a speech, which I have unashamedly borrowed from the late Steve Jobs who was a master at this. Its a great way to end with impact and to leave a specific thought in the minds of your audience.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:58

A good presenter makes the whole process look effortless. I cannot teach you to do this and if you are new to public speaking, then you will need some practice. Do not worry, here is some advice to help you!

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

Section 5: Creating Your Slide Deck
03:32

Creating effective slides is not difficult if you adhere to some simple principles - Zen is always a good starting point for simplicity. It is not a coincidence that Steve Jobs was Bhuddist and adhered to many of these principles both in his products as well as his speeches!

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

01:32

I would like to share two real world examples of slide decks I have created for speeches I have given at two conferences, UKPOD14 and New Media Europe 15. The PDFs are attached to this lecture as additional resources. I want you to take inspiration from them when you complete the activity in the next lecture.

01:29

Now its time for you to create your own slide deck. For this I recommend you use either Powerpoint or Keynote (Macs) and follow the guidelines I have shared with you. A great source of free images can be found on Pixabay-dot-com.

Section 6: Refinement and Rehearsal
01:35

This lecture introduces this section, where you will discover how to add refinement to your speech and how to rehearse so that you are ready for your next event!

04:01

A good presented can establish a strong stage presence. If you are new to public speaking, don't worry about this, just be yourself. If you would like some guidance towards this, look no further, here are some pointers on how to be a speaker with a strong stage presence.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:25

How you say is as important as what you say, so make sure that you keep your style of delivery dynamic and full of energy. In this lecture you will discover some examples of how you can deliver your presentation in a way that will keep your audience transfixed on what you have to say!

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

01:41

Numbers can be meaningless and lack impact. So if you need to bring in some key numbers to your presentation, dress them up. This lecture explains what I mean and how to do it.

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

03:10

Dealing with questions need not be a problem. I show you how you can come to the Presentation ready for anything and what to do if no one asks you a question...at least to start with

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

1 question

Dealing with Questions can be tricky and you need to be prepared.

03:03

Being able to deliver your presentation without a script is not difficult if you know your subject. Let me share a simple step by step process with you to help you go from full script to no script!

A PDF of the slide deck has been added to the resources for this lecture to help you. Download it if you think this will be helpful.

02:06

Now its your turn. Are you ready? This activity brings together everything we have been working on together. Find a colleague or just record yourself and deliver your Presentation. This is your chance to rehearse and improve before the big day!

Section 7: Case Study - Launch A Successful Podcast Presentation UKPOD14
01:32

I now want to present you with a case study of a real speech that I gave at UKPOD14 where I used all the lessons from this course to completely redesign my presentation from more of a blog post format to a speech presentation format. This lecture introduces this case study.

03:34

In this lecture I explain the stages of the speech up to the first 10 Minute Rule Break.

I have provided a PDF which you can download which has the whole of the speech outline in it as well as the original draft of the speech, so that you can see the contrast.

10:07

This is Part 1 of the speech I made at UKPOD14. It is the first 10 minutes, up to the first 10 minute rule break. I have created a video and added the actual slides that I used so that you can see how they worked together. The slide format was 4:3 so there are some gaps on the video but to have changed the slide size would have led to distortion so I hope I am forgiven for this.

01:28

This lecture explains what you will see in Part 2 of my UKPOD14 presentation. Don't forget to follow the speech structure with the PDF notes which were attached to the previous introductory lecture to Part 1.

09:04

This is Part 2 of my UKPOD14 Presentation from the first 10 Minute Rule Break unto the 2nd 10 Minute Rule Break.

01:46

This lecture explains the structure and content of Part 3 of my UKPOD14 Conference speech ahead of you listening to it in the next lecture.

10:50

This is the 3rd Part of my UKPOD14 Conference speech from the 2nd 10 Minute Rule Break to the end of the presentation.

29:21

If you want to watch the whole presentation without the interuptions, then here are all three parts in one file.

Section 8: Summary and Wrap Up
00:58

Attached to this lecture is a Course RoadMap/Checklist for you to download. These are a (tidied up) version of my notes which I used for creating the course and I thought it would make a useful resource for you to help you to understand the structure and content of the course, to find where to go to revisit specific lectures and to help to remind you of key points at a later date.

04:34

Congratulations on completing this Course. This lecture is a summary of the course curriculum as I want to be sure that you have completed every step!

If you have you will be ready to speak! You will have a Speech, a Great Title, Amazing Visuals and you will have discovered how to deliver your presentation with real style and authority!
