The Payment Options in Magento

SSL Certificates In Plain English

Setting Magento to Use SSL

In this tutorial we show you how you can set up Paypal Website payments on your Magento website. As Magento is owned by eBay, as is Paypal, it stands to reason that Paypal would be heavily integrated into Magento which makes setting up this payment gateway really easy to do.

So in the above video we look at:

  • That there are different types of PayPal integrations available
  • How to setup basic PayPal with no SSL certificate
  • How to setup PayPal for Website Payments Pro

Paypal Integrations

There are many different versions of Paypal that you can integrate on to your Magento website, and some of them use different names depending on where you are in the world. The main ones are:

  • PayPal Express
  • Website Payments Standard ( “PayPal Payments Standard” in the USA )
  • Website Payments Pro ( “PayPal Payments Pro” in the USA )
  • Website Payments Pro Hosted Solution
  • Website Payments Pro Payflow Edition

In this tutorial we will be covering how to set up PayPal Express and Website Payments Standard. Then in the next guide we are going to show you how to set up IPN (Instant Payment Notification)

The key point in the above video is that you may need an SSL certificate depending on the Paypal integration that you go with. We strongly recommend that if you are having a transactional website then you should always have an SSL certificate and with the better integrations of Paypal such as Express and Website Payments Standard, you are going to need them in order to take payment this way.

Setting up PayPal Website Payments Standard & Pro

In the last tutorial we looked at how we can integrate PayPal into our Magento store and in this guide we are going to show you how to set up the Instant Payment Notifications (IPN).

Paypal IPN is simply how PayPal will update your Magento system once an order and payment has been received. Now this is really easy to do, and you can follow us along in your system as we go and find the settings we need in PayPal.

In the video above we show you that you need to find the URL for your site so that PayPal can communicate with your website.

There are a couple of potential URL's that this could be. To make this easy for you to find we have the possible URL's that you will need. You will need either:

*Obviously noting to change 'yoursite' to your actual domain name.*

So what we have looked at in this tutorial is:

  • What the PayPal IPN actually is
  • That we need a URL to the Magento PayPal IPN on our website
  • How we can setup the PayPal IPN

Our recommendation for testing this is to now go and buy a product from your website using Paypal and see if the order comes through fine, if so Happy Days :D
