Description

In this course you will learn how to install a variety of operating systems using a single computer without the need for a large computer lab. You'll not only save money on equipment, but you'll also be creating safe sandboxed environments that won't affect your current operating system.

Install Many Operating Systems Using VirtualBox Virtual Machines to Create the Ultimate Computer Learning Lab

  • Learn the basics of virtual machines
  • Install VirtualBox, free virtual machine software
  • Install a number of operating systems into VirtualBox
  • Learn how to keep each virtual machine updated for security and stability

VirtualBox allows you to run different operating systems just like applications on your current computer.

The big technology companies use virtual machines to maximize their hardware investment and to run several virtual servers on one computer, but you can use virtual machines to run several virtual learning environments on your desktop or laptop computer.

When I first started teaching online the only way to do this was through a dangerous process called partitioning. Yes, partitioning allows you to install several operating systems on one computer, but there's a big drawback: you can accidentally delete your entire computer! VirtualBox solves this problem by creating sandboxed environments that run like applications on your current computer without the possibility of erasing your hard disk.

I designed this course to be easy and accessible to beginners. If you've never used virtualization software before, don't worry; I'll show you how. I'll first give a very general overview of virtualization that's just enough for you to get started. I keep it very basic so if you're looking for an advanced virtualization course that will prepare you for certifications this probably isn't the course for you. I focus on the basics.

I'll then introduce VirtualBox, free virtualization software. I'll show you how to install and navigate VirtualBox and then we'll start installing the different operating systems. I'll give you a brief introduction to each operating system and where to get it and after installing I'll show you how to keep it up to date. We usually don't run virtual machines as often as we run our regular computers so they can sometimes get out of date.

At the end of this course you'll know how to use VirtualBox to install, update, and use a variety of operating systems. You'll have the perfect lab setup to learn how to use different operating systems and you'll be ready to move on to more intermediate virtualization topics.

Who is the target audience?
  • This course is meant for IT students or administrators who are either not familiar with VirtualBox or want to know how to install any of the operating systems covered in the content.
  • This course is probably not for you if you are already familiar with VirtualBox or other virtualization software and how to install the operating systems covered in the course content.

We all make mistakes, right? When I first started teaching online college classes back in 2003 virtualization wasn't developed enough for online classroom use. We still wanted students to install and use Linux so we instructed them to re-partition their hard drives. This went very wrong for some students, who ended up erasing their hard disks, not being able to boot back into Windows, and couldn't get back online to attend class. Eventually this changed with virtualization software like VirtualBox. At the end of this lecture you'll be able to understand the need for a different way to experiment with operating systems.

Before introducing VirtualBox it's important to gain a basic understanding of virtualization. The key word here is "basic." I'm not going to get too technical here and you'll learn just enough to be able to feel comfortable using an application like VirtualBox. At the end of this lecture you will be able to briefly explain virtualization in case someone ever asked you about it.

Now that you have a basic idea of what virtualization is it's time to be introduced to our main application for this course: VirtualBox. You'll learn who makes VirtualBox, where to go to get VirtualBox (for free, by the way), and where to find the documentation for VirtualBox. At the end of this lecture you will be able to explain key characteristics of VirtualBox.

Learning any new application means learning new terminology. The most important terms to understand with VirtualBox are the "host" and "guest" operating systems. In this lecture I'll explain the differences and take a look at the VirtualBox documentation to see what hosts and guests are optimal for VirtualBox.

Host vs. Guest Operating Systems

Before we start to use VirtualBox you will need to have it up and running on your computer. In this lecture you will learn where to download VirtualBox and how to install VirtualBox on Windows computers. You will also learn how to download and install the VirtualBox extensions to add even more features to the VirtualBox application. At the end of this lecture you will be able to install VirtualBox and its extensions on Windows computers.

Don't feel left out if you have a Mac OSX computer; I want you to be able to install VirtualBox too. This lecture will build on the key concepts learned in the Windows installation video, but this time you will be shown how to install VirtualBox on a Mac OSX computer. Even though I started with showing how to install on Windows, I'll actually be using a Mac computer for the rest of the course, mainly because all of my screen recording and video editing software is built for Mac. From here on out it really doesn't matter if you use Windows or Mac as your host operating system. At the end of this lecture you will be able to install VirtualBox and its extensions on Mac OSX computers.

My name is Ric and I'm an Information Technology Geek. It all started when I got my first computer, an Atari 600XL when I was about 12 years old (it was new back then). I've since went on to become the Director of Technology for an international oil and gas company and then a college instructor and dean.

I enjoy teaching and my students are a priority. I've taught and developed college courses since 2003 in subjects including Linux, UNIX, Windows, MS Office, Game Development, Web Server Administration, Network Security, Internetworking, Cisco Routing, Cisco Advanced Routing, Cisco Switching, Career Development, and even Mathematics. I've also been a peer reviewer for IT textbooks published by both Cengage Learning and McGraw-Hill.

I currently hold or have held the following certifications: Certified Scrum Master, Titanium Certified Application Developer, i-Net+, A+, Network+, Security+, Certified Novell Administrator, Certified Novell Engineer, Master Certified Novell Engineer, Cisco Certified Network Associate, and Microsoft Certified Professional. Okay, so those Novell ones don't mean so much now, but they were a lot of work so I'm including them :)
