Section 2: Create a Learning Environment

The teacher needs to set up the classroom by creating a Japanese learning environment.

Learn how to set the classroom rules using ACTLAN mime.

Starting a new task in Japanese

I always to start a new task with an example (synthesising task) showing students what mark A, or the goals, looks like and sounds like.

This lecture is a video - sample oral presentation and an example of About Me mind map.

Students add their own information one by one- refer to " About Me" concept map in Lecture 4.


This video is about introducing family members in Japanese. Due to some students' unconventional family units situations, I introduce 5 family members using a hand. Teachers can introduce more accoding to your students' needs.

Year 5 is the first year we start teaching Japanese at my school.

By Year 6, the Japanese sentence structures learnt are more complex.

This task, "かわる・かわる 文がかわる” is an important foundation for the ACTLAN method.

Chizuko Gomura, Experienced Japanese Teacher

My name is Chizuko Gomura, and I have been a language teacher and educator for over 20 years. I have teaching experience both in Japan and Australia from pre-school level to university, teaching Japanese, English and Indonesian. I am passionate about language and culture in education, and hope to inspire my colleagues and students to become confident teachers and learners. After migrating with my family to Australia in 1993, I now live in Brisbane, Queensland, with my Indonesian husband.

ACTLAN methodology was founded based on on my real life classroom experience; it is a tried and tested, innovative method of teaching language and culture. ACTLAN was introduced in 2008, and many teachers have found it easy and rewarding. I have so much more activities, tips and ideas that I want to share with fellow teachers. I would also love to discuss teaching issues and mentor ACTLAN teachers on this online platform. Thanks to the internet, distance is no problem – we are all connected.
