I am Sensei Jumoke, and I teach at Zen-Shin Martial Arts Academy in Birmingham, UK.
Zen-Shin was started by my dad, Kyoshi John Richards in 1980, and is now a successful family business, that specialises in Shotokan Karate.
I am 30 years old, and started Karate at age 4. I got my Black Belt after 6 years of training, at age 10. By the time I was 28, I received my 2nd Dan.
I have competed in competitions all my life, and have trained Karate internationally. As well as Karate, I have some experience in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Chinese San Da, Tai Chi, Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I try to bring my knowledge from all all areas of martial arts in order for us to get a better understanding.
I have experience teaching students of all ages and abilities. I teach mainly in my Dojo at Zen-Shin Martial Arts Academy in Birmingham, but since the pandemic, our club has been focused online. I try to make our classes as engaging as possbile, so it really feels like we are in the dojo, training together.
I enjoy teaching Karate because I have seen the transformative effect it can have on the practitioner. It is never too late to start your journey.
In my courses you can expect to be taught how to defend yourself, whilst learning about Japanese culture, language and having fun.
Karate is not just about the kicking and punching. It can increase confidence, respect and compassion. Most importantly, it can teach us about ourselves.
I hope starting your Karate journey with me will lead you down your own path of self-discovery.
