About me
When I trained to teach yoga in 2004, I thought it would be a side job to my real career as a journalist. Instead, it has become my real job and I have been on a mission to find the best teaching and training to understand authentic traditional yoga and mind body movement. And to grasp how those techniques work from a modern anatomical perspective.
There were two defining moments in the journey – when I met Pam Johnson, around 2006 and was introduced to classical Vinyasa Krama yoga as it is taught by Srivatsa Ramaswami; And when I met Karin Locher in 2013 and was introduced to Anatomy Trains by Tom Myers, and learned Karin's system applying those lines in pilates.
In yoga, I have since trained with and become certified by Srivatsa Ramaswami, who studied for 30 years with Sri T. Krishnamacharya, but it was those initial classes with Pam that amazed me.
The movements were so slow that it felt like Tai Chi, linked with the breath and heavy on meditation. The practice brought me to the next level both in the effects on my body and my mind. When I introduced them to my students as taught, the effects were similar. But the anatomy seemed wrong.
Some might have been considered unwise based on anatomy that I had learned previously, but they clearly worked.
Then I went to a workshop called Anatomy Trains in Pilates with Karin Locher. I arrived with pain in my hip. At the end of the weekend, the pain was mysteriously gone.
This workshop was based on fascia. And this fascial anatomy was clearly the missing link.
I've since done many trainings with Karin and become certified in her Controlology Pilates method. I've also done a dissection training in person with Tom Myers and several of his live online trainings to further my knowledge in anatomy and the human form.
While these teachers stand out, there have been many who have influenced, in particular, I'd like to include my Stott Pilates trainer, Chau Pham Kidd, who provided my basis for pilates, anatomy and an understanding of stabilizing movement.
Teaching since 2004, I've sought out the best teachers and training to understand the traditional aspects of yoga and pilates, how those methods work physically in our bodies and how I can best transfer that knowledge to others.
I've studied with fascial movement experts, meditation teachers, traditional yoga instructors, manual therapists and contemporary and classical pilates teachers. This broad base, gives me a more complete set of tools to help you, the student, get the most out of your practice.
Your needs are different from those of every other student and I am constantly seeking ways to meet the needs of the individual in classes and now video instruction.
