Formerly a lecturer at the University of Surrey, I have been teaching Chinese online and in class to learners of all ages, from primary school to those in their 80s, and have always made it my goal to ensure that they understand that most Chinese characters are not pictures, but an attempt to represent the sound of a syllable.
