Matt Hoverman
NYC's premier solo show teacher
About me
In 2001, award-winning playwright, actor and teacher Matt Hoverman had a vision: to create a forum where actors, writers and regular folk could shape their funny, personal and powerful stories into compelling theatre.
Ever since, scores of students have flocked to his popular Go-Solo Workshops – and then they go on to win awards, book and movie deals, fabulous reviews and ovations in theatres and festivals all over NYC and the country.
Past students have been featured on on HBO, NPR, the Wall Street Journal and in festivals like the New York International Fringe Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, DC’s Capital Fringe Festival, the Midtown International Theatre Festival, the Estrogenius Festival, the SoloNOVA Festival and in theatres across the nation, including Ars Nova, the La Jolla Playhouse, LA’s Zephyr Theatre, Boston’s Central Square Theatre - just to name a few. His students are the winners of many awards, including the 2005, 2009, 2010, 2012 & 2013 FringeNYC Best Solo Show Awards.
Matt’s workshops have been the subject of a New York Times feature article, a Backstage column and the documentary SOLO by Shannon Romines. He is also on the Advisory Board of the All for One Solo Show festival.
As a playwright, Matt’s plays include IN TRANSIT (FringeNYC Overall Excellence Award for Outstanding Playwriting), THE AUDIENCE (co-author, Drama Desk nomination for Best New Musical), THE STUDENT (winner, Samuel French OOB Short Play Festival), THE GLINT (Broadway reading starring Beau Bridges, Jean Smart, Michael McKean and SNL's Cecily Strong), THRILLSVILLE (George Street Playhouse reading starring Edie Falco, Richard Kind, Grant Shaud and Adriane Lenox), WHO YOU SEE HERE (La Jolla Playhouse workshop, directed by Christopher Ashley), CHRISTMAS SHORTS (published by Samuel French), SEARCHING FOR GOD IN SUBURBIA (Huntington Theatre Breaking Ground Festival) and more.
Also a TV writer, Matt won the 2014 Emmy for Outstanding Writing of an Animated Program and the 2016 Humanitas Prize for Children's Animation his work on the PBS Kids TV show ARTHUR. In addition to ARTHUR, Matt has written for CURIOUS GEORGE (PBS) and SOFIA THE FIRST (Disney).
Because so many Go-Solo alumni self-produce their solo shows in festivals, Matt asked alum and marketing pro Robin Gelfenbien to co-create a one-day workshop to educate and empower solo show artists (and theatrical folk of all stripes) to take command of the business part of show business. The result is the collaboratively taught SECRETS TO MARKETING YOUR SHOW IN ANY FESTIVAL One Day Workshop, which has helped dozens of solo show performers make the most of their festival experiences and shine the brightest possible light on their work. This course (once taught only bi-annually) is now available online - anytime!
Education:
Matt Hoverman has a BA in playwriting from Brown University (where he was admitted into Paula Vogel’s graduate playwriting workshop as an undergrad), and an MFA in Acting from the UCSD.
