Before receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration from Grand Valley State University, instructor Lisa "Lanae" Lohman studied dance at Muskegon Community College under the late Judith Brooky-Greene attaining an Associates Degree in the Arts. Singing and performing since childhood, her early dance experience included ballet, tap, jazz and modern. She began belly dancing in 2005 and had the joy of studying under Laura Armenta, of the Laura Armenta Dance Company in Grand Rapids, among other instructors. In 2007, Lanae kicked off her fire dancing career by performing with the West Michigan Burnerz until founding 'Girlz on Fire'. Lanae began 'The Secret Bellydancers' early in her belly dancing career to encourage free expression of self through belly dance. She touches on everything from traditional Middle Eastern to fusion to the modern use of fire. Her eclectic dance background has come full circle bringing her back to the joy of dance, this time through the oldest form of dance. She has owned Lanae's Intimate Apparel in Muskegon since 1997 and carries belly dance and other dance wear. Lanae hosts and directs two annual fundraisers for adoptable animals in Muskegon County. "Dance for Dogs Bellydance Show" and "World Bellydance Day Night of Charity" have raised hundreds of dollars for adoptable pets.
