A Legacy in Mining Leadership
With over two decades of unwavering dedication and expertise in the mining industry, Jenn has emerged as a prominent figure, renowned for their visionary leadership, strategic acumen, and transformative contributions to the field.
Early Years and Education
Hailing from a mining town nestled in Northern Ontario, Jenn emerges as a fourth-generation hard rock underground mine maintenance worker, where the essence of mining courses through her veins. A rich lineage binds her to this industry—her great-grandfather at Mond Nickel Company, one grandfather at INCO, and the other contributing his efforts to the mines in Rouyn-Noranda. Notably, her father also dedicated his time to INCO.
The mining legacy in Sudbury took root in 1902, a coincidental inception with the birth of INCO. Mond Nickel Company was established in 1900 and subsequently integrated into The International Nickel Company of Canada Limited (INCO) in 1929. In a transformative shift, Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) acquired INCO in 2006, later adopting the concise name of Vale. Essentially, Jenn has worked at the same company as her three previous generations have done.
She developed an early fascination with the mining and electricity. This fascination evolved into a passion as they pursued a degree in Electronics Engineering Technician and Electrical Engineering Technology where they honed their understanding of the electricity processes in mining operations. Jenn is also a licensed master electrician and data scientist.
Professional Journey
Upon entering the industry, Jenn embarked on a remarkable journey that traversed the globe, with each experience adding to their reservoir of knowledge. She cut their teeth in the field as an industrial electrician, gaining firsthand insight into the complexities and challenges of exploration and resource assessment. This practical foundation laid the groundwork for their illustrious career.
Trailblazing Leadership
Jenn began her trailblazing journey right from the outset, achieving the distinction of becoming INCO's inaugural female red seal licensed electrician on a global scale. Jenn quickly rose through the ranks, armed not only with technical prowess but also with a rare blend of leadership skills. Their ability to envision a mine's potential, anticipate industry shifts, and adapt to regulatory changes distinguished them as a true pioneer.
As a mining executive, Jenn helmed several notable projects that pushed the boundaries of what was considered possible. From implementing cutting-edge technologies to optimizing operational efficiencies, her leadership not only increased productivity but also set new industry benchmarks for safety and environmental stewardship.
Mentorship and Advocacy
Recognizing the importance of nurturing the next generation, Jenn took on the role of mentor and advocate. She championed educational initiatives, forging partnerships between academia and industry to bridge the skills gap. Through workshops, seminars, and guest lectures, they inspired aspiring professionals to view mining as a field of innovation and sustainability.
Jenn has volunteered as gymnastics, baseball, soccer, skating and hockey coach and with Women in Science & Engineering Sudbury Chapter. Jenn is also currently working on her second tenure with technical committee for CSA.Z462 Workplace Electrical Safety.
Sustainability Advocate
One of Jenn’s most enduring legacies lies in their commitment to sustainable mining practices. Embracing the imperative to safeguard the planet's resources, they spearheaded initiatives that integrated social responsibility and environmental stewardship into mining operations. Her dedication to responsible mining garnered industry recognition and solidified their status as a thought leader in sustainability.
Global Impact
Jenn’s influence transcended geographical boundaries. Her expertise was sought after by governments, international organizations, and industry associations. They lent their insights to shaping policies that balanced economic growth with environmental preservation, leaving an indelible impact on the global mining landscape.
Jenn is a highly sought-after expert in her field. She has presented at conferences such as Smart Mining 2.0 and continues to speak at and promote skilled trades at many local Northern Ontario events and groups such as College Boreal and Dynamic Earth. Jenn's unique perspective and insight into the skilled trades industry is something that many people can benefit from. Her passion for her work is evident, and she is a great advocate for promoting these careers to the next generation.
