About me
From Dreams Denied to Defying the Odds: My Journey
Growing up, I always had a burning desire to join a sports club, but every time I asked, my requests were dismissed. When I wanted to take gymnastics, they told me I’d break my neck. When I was drawn to boxing, they said I’d get disfigured. No matter what I suggested, all I ever heard was, “No.”
My name is Yuri Zubarev, and I was born in the frosty wilderness of Siberia. Here, winter lasts for eight months, followed by two months of rain and sleet, and only three months of warmth. This harsh environment shaped much of my early life.
At 15 (in 2008), I stepped out into my schoolyard to train. I had no fancy gyms, no specialized equipment, not even access to the internet. I didn’t understand anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, or how to structure a training plan. What I did have, though, was an unstoppable will to train.
In winter, I’d go to the pull-up bar at -30°C. My fingers and nose would freeze first, so I’d double up on gloves and wrap a scarf around my face. When work took up all my time, I’d go down to the basement, doing push-ups on barrels and pull-ups in doorways. I always found a way. When you look for opportunities, they appear.
None of my friends wanted to train with me. My only companion was a cheap MP3 player.
Today, I’m 31, and I train with the same intensity and passion I had back then. The secret? I never forced myself to train—I love it. It's part of my life, part of who I am.
I’ve competed in various events, often winning and placing in the top ranks. But competitions were never my main drive—I’ve always preferred training solo, on my own terms. Over these 16 years, I’ve accomplished quite a bit:
- Worked as a trainer in Dubai
- Founded my own parkour and calisthenics club in my hometown
- Helped countless people master calisthenics, parkour, and acrobatics (which I always combined in my own training)
- Maintained my health, avoiding major injuries (something I’m particularly proud of)
- Created a popular online calisthenics training project with over 120,000 followers
- Authored a comprehensive guide on achieving muscle-ups and am currently working on other books about calisthenics
- Continuously kept up with the latest fitness research, studying biomechanics, anatomy, and nutrition
In conclusion, we live in a remarkable time. We have access to everything—we just need to reach out and grab it. What once took me years to learn, you can master in just a few months. Believe in yourself, and start taking action.
