About me
Ian Scott studied Psychology and Economics at University, then joined the military, becoming a commander in a Parachute Battalion and thereafter Special Forces. Operational in Central and Southern Africa, he gained invaluable insight into the motivation, leadership and survival of soldiers of all races in the harshest of environments – bush warfare – earning the respect and trust of those in various Special Forces units.
This is where his leadership journey started, as a young Officer in his early 20’s, he quickly discovered that in a war you've got very little room for error and you learn to pay meticulous attention to detail or you just don’t survive. Furthermore in the military you’re living with your troops 24 hours a day and in his case up to 6 weeks at a time. With that, you are exposed to a far wider spectrum of challenges, problems and experiences owing to the complexities of war such as the management of the ongoing, severe trauma that’s endemic in any conflict, maintenance of morale under vulnerable circumstances and motivating troops to follow you forward into the heat of the battle,
Besides that the duties of Officers included the management of the administration, logistics, planning, communication and team dynamics. All of these aspects also gave them a greater understanding of how to manage people and themselves and, above all taught them how to really lead.
Harvard Business Review spotlighting ‘Leadership Lessons from the Military’ had similar sentiments, culminating their treatise, “These are the same skills that companies need today to prevail in a climate of intense economic uncertainty.”
Following on from there Scott put these skills into practice when he joined a large Corporate organization, was promoted to National Director and headed up one of their provincial divisions.
Thereafter, he took over an Outdoor Adventure Group, founded a Leadership School and for the past 25 years has been teaching leadership and team development both locally and internationally covering his experiences as a military Commander and Corporate National Director with a special emphasis on the ‘real life’ stories - events that actually happened, which had a profound and very positive effect on his leadership.
Further, he is the author of ‘The Captain’s Journey’ which was initiated by clients asking him to record his experiences and the lessons learnt in leadership. Peta Lee from Media 24 writes, “A captivating, inspirational guide with some hilarious accounts of Scott’s days of bush warfare”
A respected, dynamic and highly entertaining speaker, this course has the same message-with much more.
