The placebo effect caught my attention one lab day. I had just earned a degree in Molecular Biology and was in charge of cancer research at the time. The power of the mind and psychology continued to intrigue me. My curiosity caused me to learn a completely new perspective on health and illness. There were still a lot of gaps in medical practice. "What's the connection between the mind and the body? Why do people recover quickly when they believe and hope? Why may grief produce physical pain?" I had so many questions.
So one day I decided to start my own investigation on folk medicine, ancestral rituals and indigenous cultures around the world. I eventually earned my degree in Psychology and a specialization in Psychosomatic medicine, and put everything I learned into practice. It worked and continues to work. Sick people can enhance their quality of life and regain their health by employing inner tools and self-awareness. There are many effective treatments and natural remedies for restoring mental balance, ranging from biofeedback to herbal medicine. When we are happy and fulfilled, our bodies adjust and cope.
As a PNEI (PsychoNeuroEndocrineImmunology) practictioner and certified Somatic Therapist I've seen the hidden (often repressed) content of the mind manifest in the physical domain numerous times. As a matter of fact, anger, guilt, and envy can reemerge at the biological level and manifest in new ways. There's a long way to go in Medicine, and there's so much to learn for the students. These are exciting times for everyone. We are finally able to integrate more spiritual practices into conventional medicine, with the goal of developing an integrative model in the future.
