About me
Dhamaravelli (Vimla) Moodley is a public health specialist with more than 40 years of experience leading health promotion, disease prevention, and social and behavioral change programs across South Africa and globally. She has dedicated her career to improving health outcomes in underserved communities, building capacity among health workers, and strengthening health systems in low-resource settings.
Vimla holds a Master’s Degree in Public Health, along with postgraduate qualifications in Health Management, Project Management, and Higher Education. Her academic foundation, combined with decades of hands-on program leadership, has positioned her as a trusted expert in public health strategy, community outreach, monitoring and evaluation, and multi-stakeholder engagement.
She has served as National Director for Health Promotion and the national Focal Point for Tobacco Control at the South African Department of Health, where she led major national programs in maternal and child health, HIV/AIDS, TB, school health, and tobacco control. Her work has shaped national policy, built nationwide capacity, and strengthened South Africa’s public health and NCD response.
As an independent consultant, Vimla collaborates with global organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO), the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), the Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC), and the Better Health Program South Africa. She has contributed to global health reports, national strategies, advocacy frameworks, and technical tools that guide governments and international partners.
