I am a Masters in Mechanical Engineering by Degree and Controls Engineer by trade.
At my first ever Internship, I was intereviewed for a Mechanical Engineering position (As I studied that in school), and the Engineering Manager called me back for a second interview showing me the upcoming controls project they will have and was wondering if I would take it as my Internship.
I am not sure if I was brave or naive back then, but I commited to that. Fast forward 12 years later, I am full blown Controls Engineer thanks to all my peers and managers who fueled my brain enough to be dangerous.
I have worked on projects ranging from $10K to $5000K (5 Mil) USD and have good grasp on heading multiple projects together. I am versed in programming Rockwell, Mitsubishi, Omron; variety of Vision systems and Robotic systems.
In the end I would say, your degree does not matter if you have the will power to learn/make a career out off. Go get it.
