In this lecture we start our exploration of Social Media Strategy by addressing the key question: Who are your Audience?
You need to consider also where your audience is to be found on Social Media in order to make sure that you can engage with them. In simple terms, there is no point trying to have a conversation in an empty room.
In order to understand the thinking behind my Social Media Manifesto, you need to grasp some fundamental concepts.
Firstly WHAT is Social Media?
HOW does Social Media work?
WHAT is the Social Media Funnel?
How do you relate the Social Media Funnel to your Network? How good are your relationships?
With these concepts explained, I ask the key question: What does this mean for YOUR Social Media Strategy?
I summarise at the end of this first section by inviting you to consider that you should "Give before you Get" and
" Build Relationships Before you Sell"
The summary of all this is my Social Media Manifesto: "Don't Sell, Share and Add Value".
In this section, I explain the complexity of the Social Media Landscape, which can be overwhelming. It is important to understand what is out there but also where you should focus your activity and where you do it.
I demonstrate that the Landscape can be distilled into Expression, Sharing, Networking and Gaming and that this all takes place on Social Media Platforms.
I explain each of these terms and then show how they come together: the types of activity and some examples of the major Social Media Platforms on which they occur.

You must relate to your audience
It is essential that you build your strategy around your own website and on the basis of a Hub and Spoke Strategy.
In implementing a Social Media Strategy, you must focus your attention on your Website and this has some key components: Control, your Blog, your Email List, the importance of including Audio and Video as well as text, building a Social Media Funnel through which to channel your audience, the importance of comments for encouraging engagement, using free give aways to encourage email list sign ups and being aware of the importance of links for Search Engine Optimisation.
In Part 2 of this Section, I demonstrate how to create different forms of Content, Text, Audio, Video and Images and how you can then repurpose this content in different way and for use on different Social Media Platforms.
Content Repurposing is a core element of Social Media Strategy.
I then highlight some other factors of which you need to be aware.
The importance of authority and relevance to Google, the primary search engine.
What Keywords are and why they are important.
The difference between Organic and Paid traffic.
The significance of being on the first page of a Google search.
The importance of YouTube as a search engine in its own right (it is owned by Google)
The importance of quality content and links to your website's ranking in the eyes of Google.
I summarise this Social Media Strategy Module by going over the ground covered in this section.

The characteristics of Content Creation.
How to create Social Media Strategies using different media: Text, Audio, Video and Images.
Finally, the importance of Google and Search Engine Optimisation.
In this section, I highlight some Social Media Tools which you can use to implement your Social Media Strategy.
The first of these is your Email List from your Email Service provider.
Then I briefly explain the potential of Google Analytics.
I explain some tools which you can use to syndicate your content and partially automate some of your Social Media activities.
Mobile Applications offer a significant opportunity as mobile Social Media is growing strongly, these may have to be bespoke and may have a cost associated with them.
I then briefly summarise the key software and hardware tools that I use in my Social Media activities.
In this section, I explain some tips and tricks to make your Social Media Strategy easier to implement.
I highlight (again) the importance of your email list. I stress the importance of having a regular publishing schedule.
I explain some of the ways that you can use Twitter easily to be effective in Social Media.
I give some pointers on the best ways to operate on Linkedin.
I stress some of the key aspects of YouTube which will help you to use that platform effectively.
I finally highlight the importance of having guidelines and Social Media Policies within your business to make sure that your employees understand their boundaries.
