Hello. I'm Sofia, and I've been dedicated to teaching languages for over six years, both through online private lessons and within language schools. My own language learning journey has been quite diverse, starting from my roots in Riga, Latvia, where I grew up in a mixed family and attended an international school. This unique upbringing, combined with living and traveling extensively abroad (and now residing in Japan), has given me a deep understanding of language acquisition from a student's perspective. Beyond my native Latvian, I speak fluent English, Russian, and Japanese.

I hold a degree in Linguistics (Philology) from the University of Latvia and have continuously expanded my teaching expertise through various courses, with a special emphasis on online teaching and the methodology for Russian and Japanese. While my academic path briefly included a Master's in Linguistics, my primary focus and passion have always been on empowering others to unlock their linguistic potential.

My Teaching Philosophy

My lessons are primarily designed for adult learners, ranging from high school students to any age adult. In my private lessons, I ensure the content is highly tailored to each student's needs and goals. For recorded lectures, while direct personalization isn't possible, I strive to create material that helps every student improve. I firmly believe speaking is essential in language learning; even in recorded formats, I incorporate exercises that encourage students to repeat, answer questions, or construct their own sentences.

I also prefer a structural approach to language learning. Instead of simply memorizing phrases, I focus on teaching the underlying grammar and explaining why we say things a certain way. I believe that by dedicating focused time to language learning, we'll discover that it's not about just memorization, but it's actually fun and interesting to learn a language. I'm equipped to teach all levels, from complete beginners to advanced students.

Why I Love Teaching

One of my favorite memories from my early teaching days was with a student who, after about two years of lessons, burst into class, incredibly excited. She had just managed to have a full conversation with her doctor in the language I was teaching her. She was so thrilled after the appointment that she called her mom back home, excitedly detailing how well her classes were going and how she could now converse at the doctor's office. Her mom, bless her heart, was more concerned about the doctor's thoughts than the language! It was a truly funny moment, but it also filled me with immense joy and reaffirmed how deeply rewarding it is to help someone achieve such practical, life-changing communication skills.
