Hello! I'm Narayan Thapa, a passionate Geomatics Engineer from Kathmandu University, Nepal, with over 4 years of hands-on experience in GIS, remote sensing, and Earth observation technologies. I specialize in leveraging open-source geospatial tools—particularly GDAL, Python, Google Earth Engine, and QGIS—to solve real-world challenges in disaster management, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development.
I’ve worked on projects across South Asia focusing on landslide and flood susceptibility mapping, air quality monitoring, and urban expansion analysis, often dealing with massive datasets and automating workflows using GDAL and Python. I've collaborated with national and international organizations, including ICIMOD, NASA's ARSET programs, and academic institutions, to apply cutting-edge geospatial technologies in research and practice.
In addition to my technical expertise, I’m also an experienced educator and mentor, committed to making complex tools like GDAL accessible, practical, and empowering for students, researchers, and professionals around the world.
I created this course to share everything I’ve learned about working with open-source geospatial data—from data acquisition to advanced processing using GDAL—so you can confidently handle any geospatial project with free and open tools.
Join me in this journey and gain the skills to unlock the power of open-source GIS and remote sensing.
