Baker Lawley

Novelist, Professor, Podcaster, Web Designer

I'm the author of four novels and my day job is as an English professor at a liberal arts college.

I love teaching and sharing what I know, and I also love learning and tinkering, which led me to start a podcast, Fiction School, and a web design project, Websites for Writers.

A little more...

When I was about six, I defaced my copy of Stuart Little. I didn’t like the ending, so I rewrote it, right there in pen on the last page. I’ve been a writer ever since–and I still have that copy of Stuart Little.

I’ve worked as a septic system tester, a lifeguard, a school uniform salesman, an editor, a freelance writer, and currently I’m a Professor of Creative Writing and English. I'm also the co-founder of Fiction School, and I run a small web design project called Websites for Writers.

I write all over the place, genre-wise: young adult novels, Southern Gothic mysteries and paranormal series, short stories, writing guides, and more. My stories have been published in some wonderful literary journals like Copper Nickel, The Cream City Review, Eleven Eleven, Oyster Boy Review, and The Southeast Review. I’ve also won emerging artist grants from the Jerome Foundation and the Minnesota State Arts Board. (Big thanks to them!)

After years of trying to avoid all things technical, I got interested in the ways new media can overlap and inform fiction writing. I founded my first blog in 2009, but it wasn't easy. I learned a little about web hosting and got an account, but when I logged in, I had no idea what anything meant! Many fellow writers told me the same, so I began helping writers, artists and creative people set up websites for their work. To date, I've designed or helped start over fifty sites for creative entrepreneurs.

I also fell in love with podcasting and talked some writer friends into starting a weekly podcast we called Fiction School. It's informative and irreverent, a great way to connect with other writers and to build camaraderie in the creative process.
