I teach people how to make maps and explore data
Hi, I'm Alasdair! (but feel free to call me Aly, like my friends do)
If you want to learn how to make meaningful maps with fascinating datasets and free, powerful software, I hope you'll join me here on Udemy. Check out my Twitter, LinkedIn or website for more about me and my work.
I'm based in Sheffield in England, I have a PhD in urban and regional analysis, I'm the co-author of three books, and have published more than 20 academic papers on data analysis, mapping, cities and much more. I used to be a Professor at a leading UK research university, where I set up and ran an MSc in Applied Geographic Information Systems (GIS), led research projects, and taught thousands of students. I now run Automatic Knowledge, a geospatial data analysis, visualisation and training company. Part of our mission is to teach the world how to map, make better maps, and to ensure you have fun along the way.
I have more than 20 years experience of making maps and exploring data with GIS software, and have won numerous teaching and research awards for my work.
My research with maps and data has featured in a wide variety of global media outlets, including the BBC, Axios, WIRED, Visual Capitalist, The Economist, National Geographic, the Washington Post, the Financial Times, Business Insider, Google Trends, the World Economic Forum, and many more.
I'll show you how to make all kinds of maps with the world's leading free and open source GIS package - QGIS - plus other amazing tools like Aerialod.
Millions of people love maps, but only a fraction of those people know how to make maps, and I'm on a mission to change that. I also want to teach people how to make better maps, so if this sounds like your kind of thing, I hope you'll join me.
I've shared my tutorials and knowledge on my website, blog and Twitter since 2008, and now I'm bringing experience to Udemy in a structured, systematic way so that people around the world can follow along at their own pace, on their own terms and in their own time zone.
