Course Description

Why make a course JUST on focussing?

As part of SLR Coaching I deliver training occasionally on Saturdays to folk that can travel to me here in the UK. The first thing I teach these students regardless of ability is how to focus, and ALL of them say they learnt something new.

What equipment to you need?

Just your Digital SLR camera.

How long will the course take?

There's around 1 1/4 hours of teaching but don't expect to whizz through it all in one sitting. The best way to learn this is to watch each video and then go out and practice a technique before moving on. You could do it in a morning although I think it will be the kind of training you keep coming back to. It's not that it's hard, just that it won't make sense until you try it and realise how the different settings work.

Why take the course?

If you've ever taken what you thought was a great photo and then got back to your computer, blown it up on your screen and seen that it's out of focus, you'll know why you need this course. The rest of you will just have to take my word and let me spare you the pain!

  • You'll get huge satisfaction from uploading great quality, pin sharp photos to social media
  • No more mocking for your 'fancy camera' but poor photos
  • Confidence to know what you're doing

Bottom line…

This is the most detailed course you will find on how to master the most important photography skill - focusing.

If you're serious about taking great photos and keen to understand your camera more this course is an absolute must!

NOTE - In this training I show the settings for both Canon and Nikon cameras but no other brands. You should be able to work out where your settings are on another camera but i wanted to point this out.

What are the requirements?

  • You'll need a Digital SLR camera and ideally you'll be shooting in a priority mode or even manual. That said, even in full auto mode you'll need to know how to focus right, it really is that fundamental, nothing else is so important!

What am I going to get from this course?

  • Focus correctly like the Pros
  • Take great photos they will be proud to share
  • Understand the focussing options and settings on their camera

Who is the target audience?

  • This course is for SLR Camera users from Amateur to Intermediate level. On my Saturday workshops this is the first thing I teach before looking at anything else, it's that important! This course isn't for Pros that fully understand focussing techniques.

What you get with this course?

Section 1: Focusing training

In this introductory video we'll look at what's being covered in the series and why actually it's so hard to focus accurately and some common problems photographers come across.

Learn more about the app I mention 'PhotoBuddy' on their website here

In this video I explain about changing the auto focus point selection for your everyday focusing. This is how all the Pros work and I don't want to assume you know this so lets break it down.

Don't be put off by the title this is another really practical tutorial that I show on all my training days as it fundamental to accurate, consistent focusing.

In this video I explain more options that you have on your Digital SLR for focusing. There's a huge difference in how we photograph a still model and a moving subject and I explain all you need to know with on-site training.

Now I haven't mentioned Manual Focusing in the previous 4 videos so in this one I'll point out the few scenarios when you might use it.

In this video we're going to get up close and learn a few tips on correct focusing of a face.

Time to wrap this up and see what exactly you've learnt!

There are rare occasions when the focus on your camera can actually be faulty, either in the camera or lens. This simple test should eliminate other problems and allow you to see if your lens or camera are actually faulty.

This was filmed as a bonus lecture, letting you come with me on a family photo shoot and seeing how all the elements mentioned above come together.

Instructor Biography

I have been a professional photographer for over 10 years and turned to coaching 2 years ago. I realised that I was the 'go-to person' whenever any friends wanted help with their photography so I figured why not have a go at this training!

You can see my training website (below) where I love helping and encouraging amateur photographers. I see so many people go out and buy an SLR camera and then leave it at home when they go out as their phone's are easier. I'm taking on the challenge of releasing those cameras from the closet and getting people out taking great photos again that they'll love looking at for years to come!
