Stefan Schumacher has been active in IT security for more than 25 years. He started computing on an East German Robotron KC85/3 computer with 4MHz and data storage on a casette. Later he joined the German hacker scene and got involved in several open source projects like NetBSD and PostgreSQL. After serving in the army he studied CS/EE for some semesters and switched to Psychology and Educational Science. There he focused on human machine interaction, human factors, instructional design and information security with a deep focus on social engineering and security awareness.

Since 2006 he works as an IT security consultant in Germany and throughout europe. In 2010 he founded the Magdeburg Institute of Security Research where he currently is the head of research and editor of the open access journal Magdeburger Journal zur Sicherheitsforschung.

He has been giving talks and doing trainings and workshops at international security conferences such as Chaos Communication Congress, Chaos Communication Camp, DeepSec Vienna, DeepIntel, AusCERT Australia, PhDays Moscow, Secure Linux Administration Conference and several government bodies in the EU. He also taught several courses at German universities mostly about psychology and information security.
