He is the co-founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Upstage AI in South Korea.

As a former NAVER Clova Visual AI leader, he has more than 15 years of computer vision & AI experience and has led the establishment of NAVER Clova OCR team and advancement of its technology.

He has published more than 10 Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology papers at major global international AI conferences, and dozens of companies in various industries are using OCR-based technologies researched and developed by him.

In addition to technology skills, he has excellent business development and leading skills. Currently, he is focusing on leading LLM Model & Applications team of Upstage, develop high-performance private LLM engine at minimal cost while ensuring maximum security. He has also led the 'Document AI' product in Upstage to help companies easily introduce AI technology to focus on their core businesses.

글로벌 주요 국제 AI 학회에서 OCR 관련 논문 10편 이상 게재하였으며, 여러 산업체의 수십여 개 기업에서 이활석 CTO 가 연구 개발한 OCR 기반 기술을 사용하고 있다.

기술력은 물론 비즈니스 개발 및 리딩 능력도 탁월한 것으로 알려져 있다. 현재는 업스테이지에서 LLM Model & Applications팀을 이끌며, 압도적 성능을 자랑하면서 비용을 최소화하고 보안은 강화한 '프라이빗(private) LLM'을 개발하고 있다. 또한, ‘Document AI’ 솔루션을 개발하여 기업이 손쉽게 AI 기술을 도입해 그들의 핵심 비즈니스에 집중할 수 있게 도와주고 있다.
