Section 1: Course Introduction
01:45

Howdy,

Firstly we would like to say a massive thank you to you for joining us on this course!

In this course we cover an introduction to the course and take a look at what we have coming up.

With that said in this course we are going to cover:

  • An overview to what Magento is
  • A look at what we need to get started
  • Setting up web hosting, a domain name for either Europe and the USA
  • Installing Magento with just one click
  • Finally we look at where you can get support

So let's dive straight in and we will see you in the next tutorial

Matt & Dave

Section 2: Getting Started with Magento Community Edition
13:29

Howdy,

In this first tutorial we take a general overview of Magento as well as filling in some of the history of Magento and what different versions there are available.

We will also get you up to speed with some of the terminology such as 'Extensions'. Plus you'll meet your instructors Matt & Dave.

The History of Magento

Magento first began development in 2007 and was released as Beta in August of that year.

Realising the scope of what they had created, Magento began work on a product that they could sell.

What came of this is Magento Enterprise in 2009 and is used by some of the largest brands still to this day including Nike, Christian Louboutin, Olympus and many many more..

In June 2011 eBay acquired Magento outright after previously owning a 49% stake back in 2010. Now in the present day over 26% of the top 1 million eCommerce sites are run using Magento, by far the highest used platform.

The Magento Versions

Magento Go

This is a hosted solution by Magento. This is great for those who are just starting out. This does come at a cost, you miss out on the huge array of extensions available from Magento Connect.

Magento Community Edition

Also known as Magento CE, this is the self hosted version and comes with maximum control. Open Source & Free to download & use.

Magento Enterprise

Costing in excess of £10,000, Magento Enterprise is meant for the huge eCommerce businesses out there like Nike & Olympus. The Enterprise edition comes with direct support from the Magento team.

Magento Community

For this course and the rest of the tutorials we are going to be using Magento Community. There are a number of reasons for this which include:

  • It's FREE!
  • It's really easy to install
  • It comes with a fantastic set of features (noted in the video)
  • Because it is open source it is highly customisable, and has an extensive extension library.

So with that said, lets head over to the next guide and look at what we need to get started.

Matt & Dave

19:43

Howdy,

This is where we cover the basics with you and look at what you need in order to get started building your own Magento website.

Find out what's needed to get going with your very own Magento site.

The Two Things You Need!

There are just two things that you really need to get started.

These are:

  1. A domain name
  2. Decent web hosting designed for Magento

These are the two basics that you need in order to get any website live on the internet.

Domain Name

So in this lecture we look at what domain names are for those that haven't come across the term before and break down what it is you should be looking for in a domain name, especially the TLD (Top Level Domain)

If you are familiar with Domain names or even have one ready to use then fantastic. If however you are new to this or are struggling to find a suitable name, then we have a fantastic tip for you in the video above.

Web Hosting

Now when it comes to web hosting we need to be aware that Magento requires a little more than most 'normal' websites do. Magento is a 'Beast'!

By that we mean it carries a lot of files and is generally resource heavy.

Because of this we need web hosting that is up to the job.

In the video we recommend two hosting companies that we have personally tried ourselves to ensure they are good enough to run Magento at a level which would make us happy to put our name to, and recommend to you.

Our Recommendations

One of the key points to consider when picking your web host is location.

The nearer your host is to your main audience, then the quicker your web pages will load for them.

Which is why we have two recommendations for you. Simple Servers if you are in the UK & Europe, Or Simple Helix if you are based in the USA.

Simple Servers packages start from £12 a month and Simple Helix start from $19.95 a month and both have packages which can handle bigger businesses too.

As it stands currently we do not have any special offers with Simple Helix, but if you pick Simple Servers and use the code 'understandinge' in the checkout you will get your first month shared hosting for free!

In the next two guides we take you through the process of setting up both Simple Helix and Simple Servers, so pick the lesson that best suits you, as there is no need to watch both, they are very similar.

Matt & Dave

10:26

Howdy,

In this tutorial we show you how to get set up with Simple Helix if your business is based in the USA.

If you already have a domain name and suitable Magento web hosting then you will not need this tutorial and we will catch up with you in Lecture 5.

If you are based in the UK or Europe then jump back a lecture to number 3 where we share with you our recommendation for UK web hosting.

If you don't however, and your based in the USA then strap yourself in as this video is for you.

So in this lesson we introduce you to our hosting recommendation for the USA

The Registration Process

So we take you through first hand the registration process with Simple Helix.

We show you how to register your chosen domain name and also look at the different tiers of shared web hosting that are available to us.

Once you have completed the check out and everything has been processed, you will begin to receive the confirmation emails from Simple Helix which contain all of your information and log in details.

cPanel

As part of this Magento website foundation course we will be using cPanel quite frequently.

It is a fantastic tool (and one of the reasons we recommend Simple Helix as it comes with cPanel) which makes some of the more complicated pieces, actually really easy to do. It is like a help wizard for your hosting.

So towards the end of the video we receive our emails from Simple Helix and show you how you can log into your cPanel and we take a brief tour.

We will be back here in the next lesson when we show you how to get Magento installed with just one click.

Matt & Dave

10:14

Howdy,

In this tutorial we show you how to get set up with Simple Servers if your business is based in the UK or Europe.

If you already have a domain name and suitable Magento web hosting then you will not need this tutorial and we will catch up with you in Lecture 5.

If you are based in the USA then skip ahead to lecture 4 where we share with you our recommendation for USA web hosting. If you don't however, and your based in the UK and Europe then strap yourself in as this video is for you.

So in this lesson we introduce you to our hosting recommendation for the UK & Europe

The Registration Process

We take you through first hand the registration process with Simple Servers.

We show you how to register your chosen domain name and also look at the different tiers of shared web hosting that are available to us.

We then pick our package and ensure that we use our special UnderstandingE discount code, which rather simply is 'understandinge' and will make sure that you get your first month of web hosting for free.

Once you have completed the check out and everything has been processed, you will begin to receive the confirmation emails from Simple Servers which contain all of your information and log in details.

cPanel

As part of this Magento website foundation course we will be using cPanel quite frequently.

It is a fantastic tool (and one of the reasons we recommend Simple Servers as it comes with cPanel) which makes some of the more complicated pieces, actually really easy to do. It is like a help wizard for your hosting.

So towards the end of the video we receive our emails from Simple Servers and show you how you can log into your cPanel and we take a brief tour. We will be back here in lesson 5 to get Magento installed with just one click.

Matt & Dave

11:54

Howdy,

Installing Magento is often criticised as being really complicated and one of the hardest steps. But we don't understand why!

It doesn't need to be complicated at all and we'll show you how to install Magento in just one click.

This means you can skip all the "geeky" stuff and get straight into learning Magento.

cPanel & Installatron

In the last lectures we got our hosting an domain name set up and importantly we showed you how to log in to cPanel which is where we follow up with you in this lecture.

So in the video above we show you how you can locate the 'Installatron' app in cPanel which is what we are going to use to install Magento on our web host.

Now some of you may see the Magento 1 click install option before you see Installatron. Our advice is to ignore this and continue to Installatron. The reason for this is simple.

Installatron gives us some fantastic flexibility when it comes to backing up and restoring our Magento system, which we will be covering in a few guides time.

Once we have found Installatron we can then use this to search for Magento. After we click on the Magento logo we now get to choose a couple of settings and enter some basic details.

The best practice is to follow us along in the video above and do as we do in your own system.

The one important box that we strongly recommend you check is the option for "Give me a clean Magento install" By ticking this box it means you will get an empty Magento system which is what you want.

Having dummy data would be useful if you didn't have this course, but we will show you everything you need to know and it will save you loads of time having to delete the demo data at a later date.

Once we have our details entered we can just click 'install' and we wait for Magento to install.

There are a lot of files to install so it may take a few minutes but this is totally normal.

Matt & Dave

06:53

Howdy,

Now we know that building your own Magento website will be an incredibly rewarding process, but we also know from time to time that you can run into a few problem areas and it can get frustrating at times.

The good news is, that you're not alone.

Magento has a following of hundreds of thousands of businesses and users which means that there is loads of support options available, both free and paid for

General Support

We always have General Support available to us which is provided from Magento themselves. We have three main Magento tools available to us for support.

Account Specific Support

There may be occasions when you will need a level of support which is specific to your Magento system.

Although the basics are the same once you start customising your system you may start needing support which is specific to your business/website.

If this occurs then again there are multiple avenues you can turn to for support.

Freelancing Sites

For the one off job on your Magento system then hiring a outsourcer to take a look at this for you may be a fantastic option. There are a number of sites available for you to find the right person for the job.

Some of our favourites are:

This is where you can pay either a development company or a design company to do some account specific work for you.

You can expect to pay anywhere between £60/$100 up to £120/$200 for a good Magento developer who knows his stuff in the UK & USA, better value options are generally found on the freelancing sites.

Your Hosting Provider

An often overlooked source is your hosting provider such as Simple Servers or Simple Helix.

With these two in particular they handle loads of Magento websites and no doubt will have been asked loads of questions regarding Magento systems before.

It may be worth a quick email or support ticket to see if they can help you out if you run into any problems on your account.

UnderstandingE Forums

A fantastic resource available as well is the UnderstandingE forums. It has a thriving community of Magento users and also like minded business owners, who are always willing to lend a hand to answer any questions they can.

It is free to join and also has a fantastic eCommerce knowledge base in there too with many businesses using Magento to sell on to eBay, Amazon and Rakuten marketplaces too.

That is also where you will find us a lot of the time too!

Matt & Dave

01:12

Howdy, we've covered what most people class as the 'Complicated Stuff' just now, and actually we're sure you'll agree it was really simple to do!

Web hosting, domain names and especially installing Magento, do not need to be 'Nerdy' and it's dead easy if you know how :)

So as a quick re-cap we have covered:

  • An introduction to Magento and a look at what we need.
  • Setting up Domain Names and Web Hosting if you are based in the USA or the UK/Europe
  • How to install Magento (the right way) in just one click
  • Finally we looked at the multiple areas where you can get support when dealing with Magento.

In the next section we are going to be getting your Magento system set up to allow you to do the basics as well as some of the cool things.

We will be giving you a tour of the Magento back end, setting you up with FTP (which will be super useful) and also show you how to create your own really cool customised email addresses.

Matt & Dave

Section 3: Free Preview of Our Other Magento Courses
03:08

Howdy,

Other courses online skimp on the things that you need to know and the total length of the video tutorials in this series is just over 14 hours.

We've split the tutorials up into sections to help you, so that you can watch the sections that are important to you or take the whole series if desired.

To get you started here are 4 tutorials, one from each of the courses to give you an idea of what's included.

Oh and the links above, they've all got the discount codes applied :)

Matt & Dave

21:55

Howdy,

In this guide we show you how to create your first product within Magento.

Taking you through the different steps ensuring you know exactly how to create a product manually. You saw us create a product in a rushed manner in the ‘Running before we can walk’ video.

In the video above however we take you at a much slower pace and go through the different tabs and attributes that you need to fill in, in order to get your first product created.

In the video above we take you through the following:

  • The Magento Grid – What will be your table of inventory once it’s created.
  • Where we go to add a product
  • Product Types and Attribute Sets – Which we cover in more detail in later guides
  • Required Fields – Look out for the red asterisks when creating a product
  • Status – Which is important for M2E Pro
  • Visibility – Which we set to “catalog, search”
  • Tax classes
  • stock availability
  • The “Save & Continue” button – If we have missed something or we have an error, then Magento will tell us
  • Categories – Which we will cover in more detail in the next guide
  • Where to add images to your products and the settings we need to save

So watch the tutorial and follow us along, either adding your own product, or just a test product like we are using.

By doing this Magento will become you familiar to you and in the next guide we are going to take a look at adding categories in Magento (in the Magento Inventory Management Course).

Matt & Dave

15:10

Howdy,

This is where we take our first proper look at Magento now we have it installed on our system.

We get hands on for the first time and give you a brief tour of Magento and look at the key areas that you need to know about from the beginning.

In the tutorial above we look at:

  • Where to Login and Logout
  • The Magento Dashboard
  • Messages & Alerts
  • Where sales orders are kept
  • Where inventory is kept
  • Where to change your password
  • Where the configuration settings are kept

Then in the next tutorial we are going to show you us running before we can walk.

We know that you are dying to see the Magento system working, so we are going to very quickly show you how you will soon be using Magento. Including adding inventory and processing orders.

Don't worry if we go too fast or it doesn't make sense as in the following course we will be slowing it right down and encouraging you to follow along in your system (inventory is 18 tutorials & order management is +17 tutorials).
