Understanding Yourself as an Entrepreneur will provide students with a solid foundation in small business conceptualization, planning, innovation, and design based on Scriptural principles. We seek to help the student learner better understand their spiritual gifts and talents, and what makes you uniquely you. With this as a foundation, it is our desire to help the student learner assess their own goals, talents, strengths and weaknesses in order to realistically prepare to launch a business of their choosing. Within this course, there are eight modules, which we describe as follows:
Module I: Course Introduction: David and Scott introduce the course, discussing who can benefit from taking the course, and their
Module 2: Discovering Your DISC Profile: In this session, you will be introduced to the DISC personality profile assessment. We’ll describe its history, what it is, and how it can benefit you. We’ll show you how to log into the Uniquely You Portal.
Module III: A Realistic Appreciation of Who You Are: In this session, we lay out the learning objectives for this session. We examine what French Economist John Baptiste Say meant when he coined the term “entrepreneur.” Using your DISC personality profile assessment, we ask you to think about your personality blend in light of what it takes to be an entrepreneur.
Module IV: Counting the Cost of Entrepreneurship: In this session, we ask you to think about what you are willing to invest to achieve your goals of becoming an entrepreneur. We begin exploring the creation of a business plan by examining the book publishing industry.
Module V: Becoming a Team Player: Sooner or later, you will have to work with others; and build a business team. Entrepreneur must be very specific about the structure of the business and the roles of the business team members if they are to succeed. In this session, we’ll consider the elements you must address when establishing these processes.
Module VI: Your Journey from Ignorance to Expertise: This session covers Generation Self Employed’s approach to talking about entrepreneurship by using the “story” of the book publishing industry. Using the book publishing industry, we will begin to work on creating a business planning process you can apply to your business idea.
Module VII: The Lemonade Stand Game: A Case Study: In this session we see that if you are an owner instead of an employee, success or failure of your business rests on your shoulders. An employee can walk away form a J.O.B. An owner cannot easily walk away. An OWNER must consider what might go wrong and cause people to complain about your product or service. By playing the Lemonade Stand Game, you will learn what it means to have an OWNERSHIP mindset.

In this lesson, we examine some of the main characters in a movie titled “The Social Network” to help us see how the different DISC personality profiles play a role in entrepreneurship. The movie is about Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Face Book, as well as the other key personalities who played a role in that company’s creation. By examining these people, as portrayed in the movie, we gain a better appreciation of how personality blend impacts entrepreneurship.
In this lesson, we identify some essential traits of entrepreneurs, and ask you to evaluate yourself regarding these traits. No one person has all of them. As seen in the movie, The Social Network, the key is to recognize that about yourself, and then build a team of people who possess the traits you lack.
In this lesson, we talk about setting goals, as well as a time frame in which to accomplish your goals in a planned sequence. We’ll look at an acronym called SMART to discover a goal setting process that sets realistic, attainable goals.
In this lesson, we ask you to think about what you are willing to invest to achieve your goals of becoming an entrepreneur. Oscar Wilde once said that a cynic is someone who “knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing." Are you a cynic? Are you someone who will not count the cost to fulfill your goals? Or, are you in this for the “long haul?” We’ll ask you to review what you wrote for the last session’s assignment to help you answer this question.
In this lesson, we introduce the concept of a business plan. Here, the purpose is not to go in depth on a business plan, but to introduce the concept. We emphasize that if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail. To help you visualize the business planning process, we’ll introduce you to a planning scenario involving a book store.

In this lesson, we look at what it means to be part of a team. Sooner or later, you will have to work with others; certainly at the point in time you launch your own business. This lesson reviews the learning objectives for this session.
In this lesson, we recognize that Americans are often predisposed to “go it alone.” In a world that is increasingly competitive, we will need to learn how to leverage teams, business affiliates, and vendors who partner with us. This approach to business, especially with the use of the Internet, is called the “Network Economy.” In this lesson, we see that to succeed in this Network Economy, you will need to learn how to build partnerships with others in order to build your business.
All teams need to develop and implement a team structure and a team process. An entrepreneur must be very specific about the structure of the business and the roles of the business team members if it is to succeed. In this lesson, we’ll consider some elements you must address when establishing these processes.

I have always enjoyed being a teacher. I have taught adult Sunday School classes and small group bible studies for the last twenty years. Outside of the Bible, I am an Adjunct Professor of Business Management and Economics for the University of Phoenix, Indiana Wesleyan University, and several other Indiana colleges, including Ivy Tech. I teach both online and face to face courses. I was named the 2005 Faculty of the Year by the first graduating class of the Indianapolis Campus of the University of Phoenix.
From 1992 to 1995, I was the State Director of the Indiana Christian Coalition, and I’ve served as a political consultant to several political campaigns for statewide office. I’ve worked for such organizations as the Indiana Fiscal Policy Institute and as a Budget Analyst for the Indiana Legislature. And, in 1999, I was privileged to prepare a socio-economic analysis of Central Indiana for Dr. Billy Graham’s 1999 Indianapolis Crusade.
I enjoy writing, and have self-published several books, including two Christian historical novels, The Brotherhood of the Scroll and The Sword of the Scroll, To The Brotherhood of the Scroll, I’ve written a companion course curriculum, “Clash of the Superpowers: A Comparative History Curriculum.”
My wife Sally and I have been married since 1979 and have three adult children, of whom we are very proud. Sarah is 32 and is a Surgeon. Jason is 31, married to his wife Gail and they have a son, Isaac. Josh is 26 and attends IUPUI.
