How and why we bow.
Common words and phrases used, and their meaning.
In this video we learn about the Student's Creed.
The Student's Creed is a promise we make to ourselves, so we use what we learn in Karate to improve ourselves, and to be kind to other people.
Usually students do not receive their White Belt until they are able to perform the Student's Creed by themselves.
The Salutation is how we start and end a Karate class.
Usually the highest grade in the class will say the salutation.
However, Sensei will sometimes pick on other people, so you better get practicing.
How we breathe is very important in Karate. The air we breathe fuels our body in order for it to perform at its peak.
We use abdominal breathing when making techniques in order to help circulation, make our body strong, and to add focus onto the end of each technique.
In this video Sensei Jumoke takes us through our first punch.
This is known as 'Choko Zuki' in Japanese, and translates to 'Straight Punch'.
Make sure you fist is made properly during the punch. The fingers a curled into the palm of the hand, and the thumb is wrapped around the outside of the fingers.
As one had goes out to punch, the other hand, also known as the 'Pulling Hand' comes back to your waist. It is important that both hands work together whilst punching.
When we stand, our feet are shoulder width apart, and our toes are facing forward. Our back is up straight, and our knees can a slight softness to them to help our balance.
The rising block defends from an attack against the head.
The Lower Sweeping Block defends from an attack make towards our body or legs.
The Outside Block can defend from an attack towards the outside of our body.
The Inside Block can defend on and attack coming straight towards us.
Zenkutsu Dachi or Front Stance is the first stance we learn in Karate.
Make sure your front knee is bent, with your back leg straight.
All you toes should be pointing forward, the direction you are moving.
Mawate, or to turn around in our Front Stance can be tricky for beginners. Be practicing until you can get it right.
Make sure when you cross your legs to turn, you place your feed wide enough so you have stability when you rotate.
