Description

Note to readers and students: Due to my own rare sleep condition called Sighted Non-24, I wrote a book on all kinds of issues related to sleep called Your Sleep Sweet Spot. This book discusses many issues not found in most books or literature. Please check it for more thorough information on sleep and issues related to quality of sleep.

When people think about the bare necessities required for survival, they often list a few obvious things, such as food, water, oxygen, and shelter. However, people rarely consider one of the most foundational needs for living a good, long, and healthy life: sleep!

Getting enough good, quality sleep on a regular basis is a foundational need for good human health. Sleep has the power to affect a person’s physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional health. Without enough regular sleep, a person's overall well-being and quality of life can begin to deteriorate very quickly.

Everyone experiences bouts of insomnia throughout their lives. It is quite common, and there are many reasons why a person may find themselves suddenly struggling with insomnia. And we all experience stress, worry, and overwhelm at different points in our lives. While these emotions are normal, they can become overwhelming and affect our mental and physical health. In this course, we will explore different techniques and strategies to help you unwind and break free from stress, worry, and overwhelm.

For example, struggling to sleep well can be caused by…

  • Mental health conditions: Depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues can make falling and staying asleep challenging.

  • Trauma: Experiencing trauma can negatively impact your ability to relax and fall asleep.

  • Stress: Feeling stressed is a common experience in life. People experience stress for all sorts of reasons, but their effects are often the same – it’s difficult to wind down and get much-needed rest when you are feeling stressed out.

  • Spending too much time with technology: Too much time in front of screens, especially when these devices are used late, can lead to sleep struggles.

  • Stimulants and medications: Stimulants such as caffeine, and even certain medications can disrupt sleep patterns and make sleeping difficult.

  • Disruptive environments: If your bedroom or living situation isn’t primed for rest and relaxation, quality sleep can be difficult to achieve.

…and many more!

These are a few common reasons why people develop and struggle with insomnia, and there are many others. All people are unique, and they have unique circumstances that can suddenly disrupt their sleep patterns. No matter what is causing your insomnia and sleep difficulties, it is possible to work through it and begin sleeping well again.

To do this, it is important to learn more about a few different aspects of sleeping: the basics of relaxation and winding down, why sleep is so foundationally important, why you may be struggling to achieve good sleep, and what you can do to reclaim healthy sleeping habits once again.
