What you'll learn

  • - Simplify a busy photo into a few big shapes before you start painting
  • - Map light, middle and dark values first, so your paintings read clearly from across the room
  • - Mix fresh, clean colors and let them mix on the paper, wet into wet
  • - Use hard, soft and lost edges to lead the eye to your focal point
  • - Paint the space around a subject with negative painting, layer by layer
  • - Paint a full watercolor portrait: skin, eyes, lips, hair, fabric and background
  • - Save your whites and place your darkest darks next to your lightest lights
  • - Know when a painting is finished, and turn mistakes into part of the painting

Description

Watercolor can feel unpredictable. In this course I show you how to take control of it, without losing the loose, glowing look that makes watercolor so special.

My name is Arie Swanepoel. I paint and teach from my studio, ArtStudio53, in Hermanus, South Africa. This course brings together three of my lessons in one place, ordered so that each one builds on the last.

**Part 1: A Boy and His Dog (5 lessons).** We start with the foundations, worked out on one painting from start to finish. You learn to simplify a busy reference into big shapes, to map the values before you think about color, to mix color with purpose, to use hard, soft and lost edges to guide the eye, and, maybe the hardest skill of all, to know when to stop.

**Part 2: Negative Painting (1 lesson).** Here you learn to paint the space around your subject instead of the subject itself. Layer by layer, the light shapes you save seem to step forward out of the background. It is the secret behind that deep, layered glow in so many watercolors.

**Part 3: Colourful Dreams (6 lessons).** Now we put it all together in one full portrait of a young woman in a blue headscarf and a yellow blouse, surrounded by flowers. We start with a pale skin wash and saved whites, build the face with small darks, red lips and warm cheeks, and paint the hair, the headscarf and the blouse wet into wet. We let flowers bloom and colors run, add fine broken lines, paint the eyes last, and sign the painting. When the first signature lands in the wrong place, you see how I turn that mistake into part of the painting.

Every lesson is filmed from above, over my shoulder, so you see every brushstroke as it happens. Real-time stretches at 2x speed let you watch the paint move, and simple on-screen animations show you the mixing, the color blooms and the edges as they are explained.

By the end of the course you will see your subjects differently, as shapes, values and edges, and you will have the confidence to paint a full figure and a portrait of your own.

**About the narration:** the narration in this course uses an AI voice, made from my own writing. All the painting is done by hand, by me.
