Welcome to the Vagal Toning Program
Polyvagal-Theory is a strongly recommended technique to utilize for survivors struggling with trauma or PTSD symptoms. This program will provide you with a comprehensive outline of the theory behind Polyvagal-Theory, as well as practical exercises involving sound, breath, and self-touch to strengthen the vagus nerve. These exercises assist in releasing trauma and settling the nervous system.
We’re grateful to have you as part of the Rewire Therapy Community!
Each exercise offered, by our therapists and experts, within this program begins with a body scan. Body scans are somatic practices that often evoke bodily sensations or emotions. Some sensations or emotions that arise may be comfortable or pleasant, whereas others may be overwhelming and stressful. Oftentimes it may be challenging to contain and manage the sensations and emotions that arise, making it difficult to return to your daily responsibilities after completing an exercise.
For this reason, we have created a somatic sensations and body scan guide. We strongly encourage you to work through this guide before beginning this program, in order to create an awareness around ways that you can respond to any sensations and emotions that may arise during the program.
Today’s practice is focused on strengthening our vagus nerve through self-touch. This exercise focuses on working with the deeper places of trauma within the body.
This exercise works to resettle the nervous system. Trauma can cause us to move into spaces of fight or flight- causing the body and mind to become activated. When events get too much, we often shut down which is more formally known as ‘dissociation’. When you find yourself in that state, these are good breathwork exercises to explore. It is not just about breathing but the vibration of the breath and activating the nerves in the mouth.
This exercise focuses on polyvagal toning with abdominal exercises to release any traumatic memories and energy held in the abdominal area. This exercise works with the sides of our bodies.
This exercise focuses on polyvagal toning with abdominal exercises to release any traumatic memories and energy held in the abdominal area. This exercise works with the center of our bodies.
This exercise focuses on softening the muscles around the eyes. We hold a lot of tension in our eyes and doing exercises to relax the muscles around them can help to relax our bodies. Practice this exercise with caution and whilst seated on a padded couch or mattress, as the reflex (oculocardiac reflex) associated with this exercise can cause dizziness or nausea if it occurs too quickly (Schwartz, 2020). If dizziness/nausea does occur, stop the exercise, bend your knees and place your head in between your knees, breathing deeply (in and out). Try the exercise again after an hour, otherwise the next day. If it continues to cause dizziness and nausea, try to slow it down as much as you can. Otherwise, leave this exercise out.
This exercise involves eye tracking as well as gentle neck stretches and upper body movement. This exercise helps to orientate ourselves in an attempt to bring ourselves back into a settled, calming space.
This exercise focuses on the rewiring of the polyvagal system through very gentle rocking motions of the pelvis and the spine to wake up the dormant energy that often resides in the abdomen after a traumatic experience.
This vagal toning exercise uses a tapping technique to tap into the body’s meridian points to ground ourselves back into our bodies. The humming part of the exercise functions to prologue the exhale to calm the nervous system.
This exercise helps to train the vagus nerve and rewire the nervous system through humming and music therapy.
This exercise helps to shift out of the tunnel vision often experienced by trauma survivors. This exercise can help to release trapped trauma energy in the body, by using our eyes to scan our surroundings mindfully, helping us to feel safer and calmer in our bodies.
Today, we are going to learn how to use arm movements along with breath to dispel any trauma energy held in the body and to strengthen the vagus nerve at the same time.
Today we will focus on a Vagal Toning technique that uses facial expressions and drama therapy to strengthen our vagus nerve and rewire our nervous system.
This interesting vagal toning technique helps to strengthen the vagus nerve to relax and calm the body. It involves using the voice and water to activate the vocal cords and the muscles at the back of the throat. Often, trauma and chronic stress are associated with not feeling heard- using our voice through sound-making in this exercise helps to get release trauma energy stored in our throat and body.
This exercise is a breathing exercise used to slow down the heart rate. The Valsalva Maneuver makes use of voluntary, forceful exhalation, creating pressure in the chest. This exercise helps to activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

Let’s support healing together.
If you or your client is living with an overwhelmed nervous system, the vagus nerve is likely weak.
This can make it challenging to regulate your emotions and triggers.
However, according to leading trauma expert Dr. Stephen Porges, the key to supporting the nervous system in moving to a calm and more regulated state is through the vagus nerve.
Furthermore, the vagus nerve is the main nerve of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for helping the body return to a state of balance (Breit et al., 2018).
This is why if one’s vagus nerve is weak, it is harder for one to regulate their emotions (Breit et al., 2018; Porges et al., 1994).
Whereas a higher vagal tone is associated with emotional stability and resilience (Porges et al., 1994).
The vagus nerve is one of the longest branches of nerves in the body, which communicates information from our vital organs back to the brain (Breit et al., 2018).
Thankfully, there is a way to increase the tone of the vagus nerve to support you in moving to a place of emotional stability.
For this reason, Rewire Trauma Therapy has brought together our top experts in the field of Polyvagal Theory to create this specialized program featuring over 14 different 10-minute vagal toning techniques and 7 theory modules.
Thousands of people and therapists who have purchased this program have reported seeing noticeable improvements from their first week of integrating these 10-minute techniques into their daily routine.
Therefore, with these techniques and enough time, we believe that you can help yourself and your clients restore feelings of safety and groundedness within the body and nervous system after surviving trauma or chronic stress.
