After releasing their new research report on investment in Educational Technologies focused on existing platforms and their implementation in the Jewish educational landscape, Jim Joseph & William Davidson Foundations decided to publish the report as a resource for us all.
The research conducted by Lewis J. Bernstein and Associates is one of the most thorough and on point research in this field. (short bios of researchers is provided in the beginning of the paper)
Since first landing in my email box I have been referring to it as the new "Luchot Habrit" (The tablets of stone) especially as my role demands me to make choices on these issues and the feeling this is a very important a larger discussion. As someone who believes in User Experience and Human centered design I find this paper of highest value.
This attempt at making it easier to digest and understand is my way of contributing to the discussion initiated by the foundations and researchers and a way to get my peers on the same page realizing that as valuable as it is, it is not an easy realm for newcomers to the field of EdTech and BuzzWords dominated spaces.
I am a great believer in User experience design and my attempt through this Udemy course creation is to offer another way of digesting the important content provided in this paper by the researchers and the commissioning foundations.
More importantly this is my attempt at providing my approch to User Experience and the understanding that good depends on what my preferences are. The 1st rule of User Experience designers is "You are NOT the user".
I hope this short, test yourself oriented agency #HandsOn, interactive and immediate attempt of mine makes this a more digestible resource for the EdTech Jewish and Non-Jewish community.
* Personal disclaimer -
I tend to write in conversational/I form as this is my experience which I share.
The dialogue between text, context and thought is what I do that shapes my identity.
I feel that whenever a reader is challenged by this they should either go to the original text or to themselves and to how they are experiencing this as a way of asking a self question.
This dialogue allows a better understanding of what I mean by User Experience.

This section explores online learning environments also known as - LMS (Learning Management Systems) or platforms. This is an emerging field that goes deep and wide.
I figured the best way to cover it is by asking you to choose one of the links on each of the following practical sections and explore it. You are of course welcome or more of each if you wish).
After your exploration which should include:
- skimming through the landing page
- Signing up for the platform
- Using it by either joining existing content (usually found in the gallery/examples/study cases section) and/or trying to create a content yourself*.
* If you choose this it really doesnt need to be impressive, it is just a way for you to try it out. think of it as taking a car for a test drive.
* After you gave it a go, go to: https://letsrecap.com/student/ and join our recap class by putting in the PIN: cbjolod
(This can also be found under resources tab in this lecture)
Interactive Instructional Tools: Creative Tools; Game-Based Learning; Augmented Reality (#AR) & Virtual Reality (#VR), Coding & Tech Related Skills.
Creating is a great way of learning new material by practicing (=learning and improving on) skills.
Digital world allowed a disruption in the way the world works, if in the past we had those who produces and those who consumed nowadays we are all Prosumers (=Producers & Consumers) as we use our wonder full of features smartphones and other devices. We have the ability to do live broadcasts from our phone using Facebook which allows us to go live in seconds from anywhere with 3G cellular reception. That was unimaginable only 10 years ago when broadcasters had to pay a lot for satellite bandwidth.
This is enabled by combining hardware (#gadgets) with software (#apps) and doing what it takes to combine them. In most cases all it takes is tapping a few times on a screen, pointing a camera at something and something is created and shared.
I figured the best way to cover it is by asking you to choose one of the links on each of the following practical sections and explore it (or more of each if you wish).
Your exploration should include:
- Exploring at least 2 media products (Video/Audio/Lesson)
- Thinking or watching an "How to video" on youtube changing the *Video* to whatever it is you wonder how it was made for example: Podcast, Youtube, name of the platform you explored.
After you explore Write or Recap a review on the forum.
- Option 1: Recap: https://letsrecap.com/student/ and join our recap class by putting in the PIN: cbjolod
** Make sure you answer the Recap for: Section two: Interactive Instructional Tools **
- Option 2: Google form which I had created with the same questions: http://bit.ly/edtechuxfeedback (This can also be found under resources tab in this lecture)
In this section the report covers: Relationship and Community-Building Resources
Sharing is caring and also exciting. Ask anyone who ever shared something they cared about if they were excited about the likes and comment they got from their audience. Ask anyone if a share they got for something they shared made them feel like it meant something.
Mr. Joe Kanfer said in this year's Collaboratory that the base for doing Jewish education right is 3 I's:
- Identity
- Information
- Interaction
I felt that was both accurate and correct and this converges to exchange. Social media enables and facilitates participation and by that the exchange of these three I's. One important clarification when I say Social Media I mean online of course but also offline as for me a face to face: meetup, conference, class or workplace counts as a social media platform.
I figured the best way to cover it is by asking you to choose one of the links on each of the following practical sections and explore it (or more of each if you wish).
So go explore and exchange and then...

Recap your User Experience: Digital Content and Portals
In this section the report covers: Support for Organizations and Educators
Well that's it for us. The report offers many references to more resources that can help bring #Tech into your work and life but I want to ask you only one question:
Go to our Recap class and answer the last class: Support for Organizations and Educators
Thank you for participating in this class and making the effort to understand the world we live and work in better.
An entry level course to get you in to the EdTech world.
I thank the Jim Joseph Foundation, William Davidson Foundation and Lewis J. Bernstein for this compiling resource and hope that my work helps others in getting there in an out to this world.
This course allows an overview of the recommendations chapter and aspires to provide some guidance and make the field research more digestible and interactive. I hope that a practice community will grow through this ecourse attempt and by that apply practices the report suggests as valid and worthy to get more people involved.
The field of Technology is one where experience counts more than knowledge so I've built this course in a way where our shared experiences create the value, that is why instead of reviewing apps myself I decided that we all will test and review in a way that we can than share the outcomes and learn from each other.
This is a participatory course and I hope this proves as a valid try and success.
