Today will be a great day to begin typing! We will learn how to properly hold our wrists, fingers, and hands on the keyboard which will also support our great posture.

Next, we will master typing f, j and spacebar.

You have a pre-assessment to complete on the typing site and a lesson to complete called "f, j and spacebar". Click "start" when you're ready to go and watch the video that comes with the lesson. Then, complete the typing practice. You may get ahead on the letter lessons if you'd like since they will take a while to complete.

The pre-assessment is a one minute typing test that measures how fast you type and how many mistakes you make in that time frame. As soon as you start typing the timer begins! Just type as fast as you can until it stops. When it stops, the screen clears and tells you a score. Don't pay attention to the wpm or accuracy right now. We are not focused on that. We are focused on learning where everything is and how to get there. The rest will come when we get to know those things first.

The final lesson will have you complete a post assessment just like the pre-assessment you took. This will show our growth from this class! I can send you the certificates for your pre-assessment and post assessment at the end of our time together if you'd like. You will need to email me at cannonscompass@gmail.com to receive your certificates. Feel free to reach me there with any questions you have throughout this class!

You are welcome to create your own login instead of using 35yourfirstnameisme (example: 35laurenisme) and password 35yourfirstnameisme35 (example: 35laurenisme35). If you do create your own login, I cannot send you a certificate. You will be in charge of printing your own certificate since I cannot see your progress on the typing site.

Keyboarding for Beginners Day 2: Punctuation12:39
Today's lesson will be a short, sweet and hopefully simple to follow lesson getting us started with punctuation. We will learn how to type an exclamation point, question mark, period, comma, semi colon, colon, quotation marks, apostrophe, and we will do all of this using the shift buttons while learning which shift to use when.

Whew! That's sounding like a lot, but it's not!

This gets us started at least and we can get comfortable with shifting instead of using caps lock or hen pecking.

For homework, we complete the punctuation lesson on the typing.com site.

Keyboarding for Beginners: Let's Learn Letters!12:58
Today is a great day to learn how to type the letters of the alphabet while keeping our fingers in the correct position on the home row. This will feel like a fast lesson, so feel free to pause when you need to practice a few times and catch up. You can also rewind or review anytime!

Remember, as long as your fingers stay put on the home row, it's okay whichever finger you use. If you go to type your homework on the typing site and a video or the instructions there contradict this video or you do not feel comfortable typing the way they show you on the site, you can always adjust to how you prefer as long as your fingers remain on the home row at all times. Wiggling or leaning is okay. Completely taking your fingers off of the home row is what will get you in trouble or make your typing difficult. We do not want that.

Keyboarding for Beginners Day 4: Numbers and Symbols15:34
Wow! We've made it to day four! This goes way too fast.

Now that we've grown with our typing, we are going to learn numbers today. It's so exciting because we do not use the keypad. We learn how to type numbers located at the top of our keyboard because we are becoming pros.
This will take a good bit of practice, so make sure you complete the numbers lesson on the typing site for homework. You also should be working through all of those letter lessons on there. There's 26 letters and each lesson breaks it up into three letters per lesson so it can take a while to work through those lessons. Pace yourself, but complete as many as possible before you get to the last day of class. That way, you're not overwhelmed.
Don't forget to checkout the games on the typing site for fun practice when you need a break.

Keyboarding for Beginners Day 5: Review7:43
Today will be all about reviewing. I have covered most of the keys you will be using throughout your time typing. We have learned so much! It's a good idea to take a little break today and use this time to complete all of our lessons on the typing site. The more you complete, the more your seedling grows into the next stage and then the next stage. This also increases your typing speed/accuracy!

Take some time to play games when you've finished your lessons. Some games be set to easy, medium, and hard. Some games can be set to specific keys you are working on. Take advantage of them (even if you think they are silly) because they push you to look at the screen while you are typing.

When you are finished with everything on the typing site (aka: all of the lessons) and you feel ready, take the post assessment. This is not a grade. This is just to see how far you have come after this class and all of the practice we've had.

If you do not see the post assessment link at the bottom of your lessons, it's because you already took it at some point. Go up to the top where it says "tests", choose that link, then choose "1 minute typing test". This should be the same thing.

Requirements

No prerequisites or requirements other than a keyboard, internet access and a computer.

Description

For our first lesson, we will discuss how to properly hold our hands on the keyboard, what the home keys are and we will have a quick pre-assessment to see where we are in our typing skills before we fully dive into the typing lessons. We are only doing this to see where we are now to then see how far we have come by the 6th day by taking the same assessment.

Following our pre-assessment, you will be given time to practice your typing skills by using online typing practice lessons set up just for you.

After class, you may login and practice you typing skills on your own. Practice lessons are already created for you to complete independently. There will be an attachment to tell you how to login once I have your information following your sign up for this class.

Every class will be a time for us to learn a new technique and to practice our typing online. Keyboarding games provided online are also used to help us practice our skills.

Following each lecture you will be asked to complete different assignments with the website provided. This extra practice outside of class will give you the chance to improve you typing skills to prepare for your final day post assessment.

This is going to be a fun and extremely helpful class that will make your future easier.
