Welcome to the course.
I am excited about what the course could mean for your life and those of others. Nothing in life comes without a bit of self-discipline and endurance and I hope you find plenty of both as you continue with the course.
Introduction
Understanding the context of the coaching relationship.
Coaching as a helping relationship.
The nature of the coaching relationship is a crucial concept to grasp, because knowing that you need the help from others in order to grow and develop is one of the key aspects of the life journeys, of those individuals who achieve true success in life.
The number 1 service you will provide as a coach is the the empowerment which comes through a caring relationship, where the goal is to see the other person grow and mature.
The 3 P's of training.
'As a man thinks, so is he.'
The way we view ourselves, the world, reality and everything around us determines everything in our lives. If you are not ready to change the way you think, you are not ready for change and you will struggle to find ways in life to be more effective and more fruitful.
Perspective is everything.
Refine your craft is crucial, studies has shown that it is not necessarily talent that separates the great from the average is dedication and discipline.
Two essential aspects of coaching.
As I have mentioned my desire was to familiarize you with the basics surrounding coaching in the shortest amount of time. The elements I therefore cover in the course is the very core of coaching as I have come to understand it. I guarantee that if you do the basics right your current personal and professional relationships will become a lot more fruitful.
The essential aspects of authentic relationship.
Let the becoming begin.
The Heart of the Coach.
We live in a world full of invisible realities that exercise a much great force upon our lives than the things that can be seen. Gravity for instance is a striking example of a force which keeps all ground, but which is is essentially invisible. In much the same way the force of a coach's self-belief can have an incredible impact on the life of his client.
Therefore always keep in mind that the invisible disciplines you exercise as a coach, is what determines your true effectivity.
What you say without using words, will impact your clients the most.
Authenticity
Real people produce real change. Choosing to accept yourself and rest in the truth of your own worithiness for love and belonging is the first step in becoming authentic.
Tough to reflect, but very rewarding.
Unconditional Positive Regard and Empathy.
We use our imagination for many things, but seldom do we focus our energies fully on understanding how someone else is seeing and experiencing the world. This kind of empathetic reflection motivated by your care for your client, will lead to significant insights about their life.
Congruence
When people know that your words are an honest reflection of your thoughts towards them, they will take them to heart a lot more. Our desire though for pleasing other people is very strong and we must not allow it to rule our lives. It is good to understand the expectations inherent in each of our relationship are important, but they should support and not define our relational interactions.
If you do not believe it, then neither will they.
Aligning our mind and being is crucial to what we communicate, achieving this kind of alignment means making a few choices on a heart level, which you will continually need to reinforce.
In this lecture I will quickly recap what we learned about how to build an authentic relationship with your client.
Simple but challenging.
If you have been alive long enough you would have common to one simple realization. Which is that more often than not as human beings we know what to do and there is nothing too complex about the action which is required from us, but making the right choice also requires courage, sacrifice, focus and will.
It might be hard to become a true coach, but I promise you it is totally worth it.
Empathetic Listening
Wow! - is all I can say about the power of really listening to another individual. It is not easy in light of the bad habits we have adopted as 'advice- givers', but man when you get it right your eyes will opened to a whole new world.
Self Awareness
Leadership and self-awareness goes hand-in-hand, but let me tell you that taking an honest look at yourself in the mirror can be scary. Even scarier is the prospect of asking the people around you for honest feedback about your life and the way you do things. But pain often leads to growth, so take courage you will be ok.
Empathetic Listening Exercise
If you can remember the second P of training I referred too you will remember that I said it is crucial that you take the leap into the unknown, it is always hard moving out of our comfort zones, but it is so worth it.
I really hope you enjoy the excecise.
Asking powerful questions.
There is nothing which will make you think like a good questions and when you can get people to think you can get them to see themself and their lives clearer. Questions also will allow the coach the gain essential information in helping his client move forward.
SMART Model
The SMART Model is a simple guide for helping you set good goals together with your client.
GROW Model
The this model is another effective framework for helping your client set achievable goals.
In this lecture I will quickly recap what we learned in the last section about how to engage in a powerful conversation with your client.
