Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It is characterized by a combination of symptoms, including hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and speech, diminished emotional expression, and social withdrawal. People with schizophrenia may also experience cognitive impairments, such as difficulties with memory, attention, and executive functioning.
The exact cause of schizophrenia is unknown, but it is believed to be a complex interplay of genetic, environmental, and neurochemical factors. It often emerges in early adulthood, although it can occur at any age. Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the global population, and its impact on individuals and their families can be significant.
