Qi Gong means Energy work or practice.

Qi is the Chinese word for bioenergy. Gong is short for Gong Fu (Kung Fu) which means effort/time.

The first eight movements of the STANDING Eight Brocades correspond to the first eight movements of the ancient 18 Luohan Hands, or Shiba Luohan Shou (十八羅漢手) brought to Shaolin Temple by the 26th patriarch of Buddhism, Bodhidharma. The word Luohan comes from the Sanskrit word Arhat. Both words refer to a person who has cultivated a high level of spiritual attainment.

Bodhidharma taught at the Shaolin Temple roughly 1000 years after the passing of the Buddha, around 550AD. He chose to pay homage to these 18 Luohan, naming a set of qigong techniques after them. The word Shou means “hands”, but refers to the 18 techniques, as in the 18 Techniques of the Enlightened Ones.

The SITTING eight brocades were common preventative exercises done first thing each morning to preserve general health.

Marshall Yue Fei is credited for writing down, preserving and transmitting these arts, at a time few could read or write, but they are in fact much older.

This energy work can maintain your health and boost the immune response. After six months of daily practice, it is common for people to notice they cannot catch a cold or flu anymore, unless they allow themselves to become stressed. Stress dampens the immune response.

Your mindful calm can protect your health, and paired with these movements, you can gain control over your health and daily experience.
