This introductory lecture will take us through the aims and objectives of the course.
It outlines the basic structure of how we will navigate these intricate issues and provides an overview of:
- Strategic thinking
- Scenario planning
- Energy transitions
And we will start thinking about the ways to grapple with these issues.
In this lecture, we look at why having a scenario mindset is so important. More than just forecasting or sensitive outlooks, a scenario mindset assesses all potential outcomes of the currents and countercurrents within the world.
Performing truly accurate strategic analysis is only possible with a scenario mindset!
In this lecture, we assess some of the biggest challenges to creating efficient and equitable energy transitions. In particular, we explore this through two lenses:
- Development
- Decarbonisation
True energy transitions cannot take place without taking these two imperatives into account.
In this lecture, we look at the broader global context within which any scenario thinking needs to take place.
This context includes, among others:
- The Economic Cycles
- Political Instability
- Planetary Boundaries
- Urbanisation
- New Technology
Scenarios and transitions do not happen within a vacuum, and to properly undertake scenario planning the broader context needs to be accounted for. This lecture guides you as to how best to do that.
In this lecture, we come to realise how, although global growth to the energy transition is needed, the implications for these transitions are different for different sectors, countries and areas.
There is a similar nature to the way we need to introduce these transitions, but how the impact will be felt needs to be taken into account.
In this lecture, we look at decisions and choices.
In our jobs and our lives, we all have to make decisions daily, but we don't often assess the best way how to make those decisions in order to have the desired impact. Within the energy transition, and with increasingly growing uncertainties, we need to make wise and informed decisions to create the best possible outcomes.
This lecture provides a tried and tested approach to making wise decisions.
In this lecture, we discuss how to create real impact and bring scenarios to life. Scenarios in themselves cannot create change without realising them in the policies and decisions of the leaders within an organisation.
The two crafts to create this impact are:
1. Developing insightful and compelling content
2. Bringing insights to life in the minds of decision-makers
This lecture details some of the philosophy behind these crafts, the importance of the 'learner' mindset and provides a guide on how to introduce these crafts into your scenario work.
In this final lecture, we review the ideas of scenario thinking and radical uncertainty that we have engaged with.
We look at how these areas impact and can indeed introduce better decisions, specifically around energy transitions.
Finally, we will go through some closing thoughts on what decisions you can make today to better future-proof your organisations and introduce better scenario-planning into a changing, energy-reliant world.
Hello Folks and welcome to my Online Course!
This course is designed to be a foundational model for addressing radical uncertainty and scenario planning within the scope of energy transitions. Whether in business, in your profession, or simply for personal development, we need more people in the world to grapple with these important issues.
I have built this course because I know that now more than ever we need to create critical thinking patterns which can adequately address one of the most important issues of our day - a just energy transition.
I have spent the last 50 years of my career involved in strategic scenario planning and accounting for radical uncertainties in some of the biggest organisations in the world, including heading up Shell Scenarios division and co-chairing the World Energy Council, and so I thought I would share my learnings with you.
In this course, you will find 8 modules that take a deep dive into many critical thinking issues, from creating strategic value in your organisations to some of the broader impacts of the energy transition.
It is a space that I hope can give you everything you need to start building effective futures for you and your organisations.
