When you are experiencing chronic stress, it may sometimes seem as if you are the only stressed out person in a world full of healthy, happy people. This is a misconception: you are far from being alone. Stress is actually one of the biggest health problems of our current society.
We start with a story, in which you will imagine yourself as hunter, roaming the jungle for food.
We're diving deeper into the stress response.
The stress response is wonderful in life threatening situations. However, if you turn on the stress response for too long, for purely psychological reasons, you set yourself up for getting sick.
Before you start doing any of the ten yoga exercises in this course, it is important that you first change your perception of stress. Why? Because, according to scientific studies, your perception of stress influences how you experience stress. Changing your perception is the first step in reducing stress symptoms!
Doesn’t any type of exercise reduce stress? Why not just play a game of basketball instead, or lift weights in the gym? In this lecture we will go into how yoga is different than regular exercise.
To really understand how yoga can help you reduce stress, it is good to know a bit about its spiritual origins. Don’t worry: spiritual aspiration is not required to benefit from the yoga exercises in this course. However, to understand how yoga techniques are different from regular exercises, it can really help to know why these techniques were created in the first place.
We discuss how science is more and more confirming what the age old tradition has always said: yoga has great healing and restorative effects.
It may sometimes seem that yoga is all about being flexible. This is a misconception. Yoga’s primary concern is to create awareness, not fitness (although this will be a side effect). If you are not flexible, do not get discouraged. Accept the limitations of your body and leave your ego at the door. What matters is your state of mind.
