Explore advanced clinical practice and research in acute oncology through a doctoral capstone experience, highlighting artifacts, the role of occupational therapists with oncology patients, and the chosen frame of reference.
Connects needs assessment with occupational therapy's role in acute oncology, aligning with the vision of 2025 and the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework to promote client-centered, evidence-based outcomes.
Occupational therapy in acute oncology uses meaningful activities to support mental and physical health, with limited research but evidence that exercise is safe and improves fatigue and quality of life.
advance clinical practice and research in acute oncology through capstone work, evaluating occupational therapy's impact on quality of life and independence, and strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration in oncology care.
I apply the model of human occupation (Moho) as a holistic, client-centered framework, assessing volition, habituation, performance skills, and environment to guide acute oncology practice across the lifespan.
Explore site information at MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cancer care hub focused on life-saving innovation, collaborative capstone learning, addressing emotional and physical effects, and preparation for life after treatment.
Develop and apply evidence-based, occupation-based practice in oncology through lifelong learning and continuing education, incorporating the Certified Clinical Trauma Professional credential and pediatric applications.
Explore how occupational therapy addresses physical and psychosocial well-being in acute oncology, promotes ethical advocacy, and uses Moho to engage patients toward discharge and quality of life.
Assess the Sox OTS screening tool for identifying OT needs in cancer care, compare with Ampak, and collect data via surveys and Redcap three days prior to the PMR visit.
Explore capstone dissemination through key questions on frame of reference, study intent, and site location, then acknowledge mentors and MD Anderson collaborators who supported OT in acute oncology.

In this course, you will learn about my capstone experience at MD Anderson in Houston Texas, where I completed Advanced Clinical Practice and Research in Acute Oncology. In this presentation, you will be able to identify one of the three artifacts from the learning objectives, describe why it is important for occupational therapists to work with oncology patients, and discuss why I used the frame of reference I did. My needs assessment revealed a lack of research in acute oncology regarding occupational therapy. With this being said, my focus clinical question consisted of How does engagement in meaningful occupation impact the outcomes of acutely ill oncology patients. Oncology is an emerging practice area in the world of occupational therapy where occupational therapists are skilled in helping people live life to the fullest wherever they are in their treatment and recovery plan. Not only did I complete a clinical trauma certification course, I also presented to all physical and occupational therapists at MD Anderson in regards to motivating the unmotivated patients as the 2024 Patient/caregiver refusal rate accounted for roughly ¼ of all missed visits. Lastly, is the study, The Screen of Cancer Survivorship – Occupational Therapy Services, otherwise known as the SOCS-OTS.
