Being neurodivergent is a "double-edged sword" - that is, "something that offers benefits, but also carries inherent risks and drawbacks." However, like a double-edged sword, neurodivergence is something that can be incredibly powerful when wielded with skill! In this lecture, you will learn about both sides—the strengths and the risks—of many common neurodivergent traits. While you're watching, think about where you see yourself in the strengths being described, and feel free to get started on the strengths worksheet in your workbook if you want to multi-task.
Being neurodivergent comes with a lot of pitfalls you might not know about. Here, you'll learn about the big ones, helping you gain invaluable perspective on what you're experiencing at work.
This is where we get into some tough realities about the corporate world, and most of the working world in general. These are things you simply have to accept if you're going to make a living this way. Once you can see them for what they are, you can navigate them effectively without losing yourself. And if you start to feel overwhelmed while you're hearing about all this, don't worry—in the final section, we'll use your workbook to address exactly how you personally can make the most of this environment!
Seeing yourself through the eyes of your neurotypical counterparts is, unfortunately, a critical component of corporate survival. By preempting the ways you might be misperceived, you can save yourself a lot of headaches, wasted energy, and broken trust down the line. And, you'll be better equipped to do damage control when things do go sideways.
Time to dig into our core framework for focusing your energy at work!
Pull up the AMPLIFY worksheet in your workbook and read the instructions before you begin the lecture.
The second part of the AMPLIFY framework for focusing your energy at work. Remember to follow along in the AMPLIFY worksheet in your workbook.
This lecture introduces the Personal Plan section of your workbook, which is the bulk of it. Going forward, you will be doing a lot of independent work in your workbook. Good luck!
As an addendum to the rest of the course content, this lecture discusses the miscellaneous topics of disclosure (should I tell my job I'm neurodivergent?), accommodations, the hiring process, burn out, having a bad boss, and PIPs (Performance Improvement Plans). If any of these topics sound relevant to you, you may wish to watch this lecture before continuing to completing your workbook. Otherwise, you can feel free to skip it for now.
The corporate workplace is not set up for neurodivergent professionals to succeed. We often have so much to give, but because we don't know how to—or don't want to—"play the game," we end up pushed aside, overworked, underutilized, condescended to, and sometimes even fighting just to stay employed.
Take it from an autistic neurodiversity researcher, career coach, and author of the "Neurodivergent Corporate Survival Guide" on Medium: I know, from personal experience, what you're going through. And I'm here to help!
This course is for skilled, intelligent, capable neurodivergent professionals (ADHD and autism spectrum in particular) who for some reason just cannot get what they deserve out of their careers. Whether you find yourself chronically underemployed, underpaid, misunderstood, passed over for promotion, taking on too much, confused by the workplace politics, or just plain dissatisfied with how much energy you're putting in and how little you're getting out, this course is for you.
My professional background is in workplace culture research and the tech industry. I'm a neurodiversity consultant and certified career coach with hundreds of hours of coaching experience. Through my live workshops and career coaching, I've helped hundreds of neurodivergent professionals have "aha moments" about what's going sideways in their careers and how they can reclaim their agency to survive—and even thrive!—in these challenging corporate environments.
I built this course because I receive more requests for 1:1 coaching than I can take on, and after so many years of working through these challenges with clients, I have troves of insights and guidance to share that just aren't reflected in existing, widely-available resources.
This course requires attention, commitment, and focus. There is a ton of lecture content, but also a ton of self-guided coaching content in the form of a workbook.
You will come away with a much clearer vision of where you are, where you've been, and where you're going—armed with a plan and a community that will get you there!
