Introduction to the course, we explore the goals of the course and what we are getting ourselves into!
Here is where we will listen to the final mixed track so you can hear what the final product should sound like.
Students will learn how to effectively route elements of their mix using auxillary sends, as well as how to setup an effective mix bus using harmonic excitement and compression.
Students will learn how to effectively process drums that were programmed, combined with additional drum samples, in a heavy metal setting.
Students will learn how to mix a well-rounded bass guitar sound using a DI track and plugins.
Students will learn the fundamentals of mixing heavy rhythm guitars and soaring lead guitars in a heavy metal track, and how spatial widening can increase the fidelity and depth of a recording.
Students will learn how to balance VST based synths/keyboards in a symphonic metal mix with a clever use of parallel compression, reverb, delay and spatial widening.
Students will learn how to mix powerful vocal tracks ranging from female vocals, male vocals, harmonies and death metal growls.
In this short course, I will guide you step by step through the process of mixing a symphonic heavy metal track that was recorded using minimal equipment and programmed drums. You will gain insight into the unique challenges and creative opportunities that come with working under these constraints, and how to turn them into strengths during the mixing stage. Throughout the course, we will explore key mixing philosophies specific to the genre, including how to balance orchestral elements with heavy guitars, bass, and drums while maintaining clarity and impact.
We will also examine how early production decisions influence the final mix, helping you make smarter choices from the start. Practical topics include setting up bus tracks and routing efficiently, applying parallel compression for power and cohesion, selecting plugins, and understanding when and why to use specific hardware tools. Additionally, we will discuss the pros and cons of different mixing approaches and consider hypothetical scenarios that can shift the direction of a production. The course also includes insights into songwriting and composition from a professional with nearly two decades of experience.
This course is invaluable to those starting out on their music creation journey, or for seasoned pros who are looking for another perspective on how to approach mixing a niche genre of music.
