In American Football, a player who is determined by game officials to have committed an illegal action incurs a penalty on behalf of his team, and the down is replayed. These penalties are assessed in yardage. The rules try to ensure that the penalty is appropriate to the offense committed; a minor offense is usually punished by a five yard penalty, whereas some more aggressive actions can result in much more.
