  • Starting Your Journey in Jewelry Fabrication! Please watch before beginning!5:01

This craft is difficult and challenging, so don't get frustrated! Take your expectations and wrap them up with a bow! Your expectation should be to learn, apply, and practice the skills you learn! Practice makes progress! This craft is truly about the journey and not the destination. Everything you'll experience is par for the course with no one escaping the frustrations of learning and applying these difficult skills and challenging concepts.

I know you're excited to begin, but please go through the lessons in order. There are bits and bytes of information that you need to hear, sometimes, several times, for it to register and stick to apply now and sometimes later on down the line. I share technical nuances that are important nuggets to strengthen your skills and increase your depth of knowledge. There are no shortcuts and what you do not address in the beginning will 100% come back for you down the line.

About this project - In case I don't mention it 1,000 times, these earrings, and this form, is/are an amazing and versatile make that you can come back to again and again! They are, always have been, and remain a great seller for me in the store. While your first pair(s) may be wonky, you'll slowly refine your technique to a product you are proud of. Take note of how your metal moves as you forge!

My execution of this form is clean + precise, but you can make them in your own style. You'll sell them right off your ears! And what you don't yet realize is how this form translates to rings, cuffs, and bangles! I hope you're excited to get started!!

Requirements

  • No experience necessary and THE place to start to start building a strong foundation to make jewelry by hand!
  • Dedicated time to learn, apply, and practice your skills to solidify foundation concepts
  • A desire to make wonderful, shiny things!

Description

This project is a great place to start your journey in jewelry fabrication as a great barometer to see if you like applying technical skills and concepts to make these simple earrings. You will learn how to measure your metal, cold forging, hammers versus mallets, a bit of science and physics in how your metal moves, proper filing and refining techniques, drilling, and how to make two styles of earring wires. Worst case you have a blast making this rewarding project, best case you're hooked and are starting a master craft journey that ignites a passion in your soul!

In this engaging workshop students will learn three styles of bar earrings and two styles of earring wires. This project was taught as the first project in my community teaching studio and was an absolute delight for the students! The course image shows first night student copper earrings, instructor sample in sterling silver, and a cool variation on the form we learn in class, also in sterling! This is such a great make!

Don't let the simplicity of this project fool you, it is not a 'beginner' project. The depth of this form will keep you coming back again and again. It is an engaging and amazing form that is appealing to students and sneaks in a bundle of foundation skills and concepts that you'll apply in everything you make from earrings to engagement rings. This form is so versatile and can be applied in rings, cuffs, and bangles.
