Today lets learn a little about distraction and why our brains crave them at times. Our behavior is driven by the desire to relieve discomfort. Distraction is how the brain deals with relieving us of the discomfort of doing the hard things which we need to evolve and progress. Once begin to become proactive in managing distractions, we can put together an action plan. By making a plan before we start the hard work in dealing with distractions, we are ready when attempt to take us off track.
Action Steps for Today
Delve into the realm of distractions: Take a moment to identify your main sources of distraction, such as social media, email, or Netflix.
Uncover the three root causes of discomfort that drive you towards these unwanted behaviors.
Hyperfocus is a crucial element that extends beyond just our careers. It plays a vital role in our relationships and every aspect of our lives. By dedicating our full attention to specific areas at specific times, we ensure that each realm receives the focus it deserves. Multitasking and trying to juggle everything simultaneously only leads to diluted efforts and distractions.
To attain hyperfocus and overcome distractions, we must shift our mindset and view past shortcomings as valuable learning experiences rather than failures. Let go of negative labels and replace them with a positive self-dialogue. By eliminating words like "always" and "never," we open ourselves up to growth and improvement. Embrace the power of hyperfocus and use past failures as valuable data to propel us forward in achieving our goals.
You Action Steps
Empower yourself by reshaping beliefs: Write down any self-labels that may be hindering your progress. Evaluate whether they truly contribute to your goals and release anything that no longer serves you. It's time to embrace your abilities and believe in your potential.
Extend self-compassion: Imagine a dear friend experiencing a setback. Offer them words of encouragement to uplift their spirits. Now, apply the same kindness and support to yourself in a similar situation. Let's become our own best friend, inspiring and supporting ourselves throughout the journey. Provide three examples in the last week where you did NOT show self-compassion to yourself? How would you do it differently now?
Conquer external distractions: Identify three external triggers that have previously derailed your focus. Engage in a brainstorming session to generate ideas on how to either remove or reframe these triggers, allowing them to better serve your journey towards hyperfocus.
Today, we will delve into how embracing the discomfort of a mindset shift can propel our personal evolution. Our brains are instinctively wired to seek comfort and avoid pain. However, it's crucial to recognize that from an evolutionary perspective, our brains are hardwired to perpetually strive for more and never settle. While this discomfort served a purpose in our survival and growth, it can work against us in today's modern world if we fail to address it. So, how can we leverage this understanding and utilize discomfort to our advantage?
Let's develop awareness of the triggers that cause discomfort:
Boredom: The untrained and unconscious mind tends to resist being alone with itself. An intriguing study on boredom involved placing individuals, both males and females, in an empty room with only a button that delivered a mild shock. Surprisingly, over time, 67% of men and 25% of women chose to shock themselves rather than experience boredom. People instinctively prefer action over being left alone with their thoughts.
Negativity Bias: Our minds naturally tend to give more attention to negative events compared to positive ones. Research indicates that individuals find it easier to recall negative memories than positive ones. This bias has evolutionary roots since our ancestors needed to remember what caused harm to survive in challenging environments. However, in our modern society where constant threats are rare, this bias can work against our well-being.
Rumination: It is common for us to dwell on negative thoughts or past events, repeatedly replaying them in our minds. Whether it's a failed relationship or something we said or did at a social gathering, this tendency consumes a significant amount of our mental energy. Often, there may be no immediate solution, and the key lies in accepting what transpired and learning from it, acknowledging the discomfort and extracting valuable lessons.
By acknowledging and understanding these triggers of discomfort, we can begin to harness their power rather than succumbing to their negative effects.
Action Steps
Harness the power of dissatisfaction: Reflect on the factors that have caused you to feel dissatisfied today. Write down 1-2 specific instances that triggered this emotion. Explore how you can channel this dissatisfaction into actionable steps that lead to improvements and a greater sense of fulfillment.
Now that we have identified the triggers that lead to discomfort, let's delve into the process of reimagining internal triggers. While we may not have control over the thoughts that bring about discomfort, we do have control over how we respond to them.
Step 1: Recognize the discomfort that precedes the distraction - focus on the internal trigger. For instance, when I sit down to write content, I often bring my phone with me to my desk under the pretense of needing it in case of an emergency. However, the reality is that if there were a genuine emergency, a phone call would be more appropriate than a text message or social media notification. In truth, I bring my phone along as a source of instant gratification whenever I encounter a challenging task.
Step 2: Document the internal trigger. Take a moment to write down the internal trigger as soon as you experience it. This can be done in a journal or using a dedicated app. The act of documenting it immediately helps to raise your awareness. Treat it as if you are observing someone else's behavior, being a detective in analyzing the trigger. Is it anxiety, boredom, or something else? By identifying it, you gain valuable insight.
Step 3: Implement the 10-Minute Rule. Before acting upon the distraction, follow the 10-Minute Rule. Give yourself permission to have the desire for a dessert or to reach for your phone, but wait for 10 minutes before indulging in the distraction. Research has shown that, in many cases, the urge dissipates within this time frame. The urge for distraction is a temporary trick that our untrained brains seek for comfort. By riding out this 10-minute window, we gradually limit and eventually eliminate the urge for distraction.
By following these steps, you will gather data on your distractions and, over time, develop a heightened consciousness of their impact and the amount of time they cost you. This process empowers you to take control and make informed choices, ultimately reclaiming your focus and maximizing your productivity.
Action Steps:
Unravel the mysteries of distractions: Consider a frequent distraction you encounter. Identify the discomforts or internal triggers you experience immediately prior to succumbing to the distraction. For example, if scrolling news headlines becomes tempting when stressed, make observations about yourself and the patterns related to this internal trigger.
Today, we will explore strategies for maintaining commitment to our schedules, even in the face of unavoidable distractions.
One crucial aspect often overlooked in discussions about hyperfocus and distractions is the need to understand what we are being distracted from. It is only when we are aware of our intended goals at any given moment that we can identify potential distractions. To achieve hyperfocus, we must have absolute clarity on what we want to concentrate on. Without a plan for how we allocate our time, everything can easily become a distraction. Have you ever experienced a busy day yet felt unaccomplished? Research indicates that only a third of individuals in the Western world wake up with a defined schedule or plan for their day, lacking a clear direction for their time. Time is our most valuable resource, and often, we spend it unconsciously. If we fail to plan our day, others will take charge – be it social media, family, friends, or loved ones – under the misguided belief that they are doing us a favor.
Rather than focusing solely on what we should do, let us delve into the "why" behind our actions. To gain this perspective, we must first identify our values. Values encompass the characteristics of the individuals we aspire to be, such as honesty, excellence in parenting, or maintaining focus in both personal and professional spheres. Values are not final destinations, and we may never fully embody every ideal characteristic. However, they serve as guiding principles for our actions. When we live in contradiction to our values, we experience imbalance and may even harbor disrespect or dissatisfaction toward ourselves. This dangerous situation can lead to seeking more distractions as a means to escape this discontentment. As we previously learned, our brains naturally seek pleasure and avoid pain.
Once we have identified and allocated time for our top priorities across three key realms (Self, Relationships, Career) in our lives, we can then identify any actions that do not align with those priorities as distractions. Hyperfocus is achieved by establishing our values and dedicating specific time slots to behaviors that uphold those values. Developing this muscle requires persistence, and initially, we may encounter resistance from colleagues and loved ones as they adjust to the new version of ourselves.
By implementing these strategies, you will gain the ability to stay committed to your schedule amidst unavoidable distractions. Embracing hyperfocus empowers you to lead a life driven by your values, enabling you to maximize productivity and fulfillment.
Action Items:
Craft your ideal day: Envision how you would spend your time on a typical week, aligned with your values and aspirations. Compare this vision to your current daily schedule, identifying gaps and areas for improvement. Determine the activities you wish you had more time for and strategize ways to incorporate them effectively.
Timeboxing is a proven time management technique that involves allocating specific blocks of time to various tasks or activities. Instead of working on a task until it's finished, timeboxing sets predetermined time limits for each task. During these designated time frames, your sole focus is on the assigned task, aiming to make progress or complete as much as possible within the allocated time. Timeboxing is a powerful tool that enhances productivity, sharpens focus, and offers a structured approach to effective time management. By implementing timeboxing, you cultivate a sense of urgency and prevent tasks from unnecessarily expanding to fill more time than required.
In conjunction with this lecture, you'll find a Timebox template attached, which serves as a valuable guide in creating your own personalized Timebox schedule.
Action Steps:
Invest in yourself: List 3-4 activities you want to engage in for personal growth and well-being this week. Incorporate them into your schedule.
Nurture relationships: Identify the activities you want to do with or for the important people in your life on a weekly basis. Allocate the desired amount of time for each activity.
Enhance your work domain: Write down 2-3 activities you want to accomplish in your work domain. Rearrange your calendar to create dedicated time slots for these activities.
Today, we will begin the process of visualizing our ideal distraction-free time across all three realms of our lives. By envisioning this change, we can then delve into strategies to attain it. One common element in all three realms is the need for authentic and, at times, uncomfortable discussions with the individuals in our lives. However, when approaching these conversations from a place of service, where we express our desire for personal growth not only for ourselves but also for the benefit of everyone involved in these realms, we can anticipate support and encouragement.
Action Items
Design your personal time: Reflect on 2-3 strategies to schedule dedicated moments for self-care. Consider whether early mornings, tranquil evenings, or any other quiet periods would best suit your needs and allow you to recharge.
Enhance your relationships: Explore 2-3 approaches to strengthen your connections by incorporating scheduled bonding time. Consider planned bedtime routines, engaging in date nights, scheduling outings with friends, or setting specific times for calls with family and loved ones.
Optimize focus and productivity: Brainstorm 2-3 techniques to create time slots for undisturbed work on your most critical tasks. This may involve setting up automated email replies, having brief yet effective conversations with your boss and colleagues, or signaling your availability to others by using a "Do Not Disturb" sign during specific hours.
As we finish this journey, lets stay focused on our WHY, while also acknowledging the need for others to adjust to your journey. We will explore the benefits that come with taking action and the discomforts associated with remaining stagnant. By understanding and internalizing these concepts, you will gain clarity, motivation, and the determination to pursue your goals while navigating the challenges that may arise along the way.
Action Steps:
Embrace your WHY: Remind yourself of your purpose and stay unwaveringly focused on it, especially during challenging times. Let your WHY be the driving force that propels you forward in your journey of growth and evolution.
Give room for adjustment: Provide your family and team with the opportunity to adapt to the new version of yourself as you embrace hyperfocus. Allow them time and space to understand and support your commitment to personal and professional development.
Highlight the benefits and discomforts: Take a moment to list all the advantages you will gain by following through on attaining hyperfocus. Recognize the positive impact it will have on your work, relationships, and overall well-being. Additionally, write down all the discomforts and limitations of not taking action and remaining stagnant, as a reminder of the importance of your journey towards growth and improvement.
