Please note: Here is an example of what I used in an AI tool after completing the worksheet:
My Ideal customers are small businesses with less than 100 employees that do not have a formal HR department. The person that handles HR is someone who also handles accounting, payroll, and office management. They are looking for HR help to make sure they are compliant with all the laws in the state of California but they don't have much time as they are overloaded with work in all their other job functions.
I've provided a sample business plan for you to use if needed. It's in Word format, so you can easily customize it to suit your needs.
When I first started, I connected with my local Small Business Administration (SBA) office and scheduled an appointment to meet with them. They were fantastic! They provided valuable information on grants, loans, and other funding options (if I decided to pursue them). They also connected me with a marketing expert and a finance specialist – all for free! I gained a lot of insight, and I highly recommend you do the same. Plus, as new businesses come to the area, they’ve referred new clients my way, making it a great overall experience.
If you decide to do the Pay As You Go Model, I suggest you make your hourly rate higher. Mine is set at $225/hour to motivate my clients to sign up for a bank of time or retainer. You can then lower the hourly rate based on the bank of time. For instance:
Hourly rate: $225/hour - pay as you go
5 hour bank of time: $1000
10 hour bank of time: $1950
The hourly rate decreases for the bigger bank of time I offer. Rates are different depending on where you live and who your target market is but at least this gives you an idea.
Remember - don't sell yourself short when it comes to the skills you have and what you charge clients. HR consulting isn’t about knowing everything. It’s about using the skills you already have and applying them in a different context. You've likely built skills in problem-solving, managing employee issues, navigating policies, and providing leadership support. These are the exact skills that companies hire consultants for! This was one of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started, you can either work a lot of hours for less or less hours for more - I will take the less for more any day!
There are many networking groups available, and I also joined my local Chamber of Commerce specifically because they do monthly networking events. I've received many referrals from attending these events, so I highly recommend you consider joining your local chamber and participating in their gatherings.
In my town, there are also some Facebook Groups such as Women in Small Business and an Entrepreneurial Group. They both have monthly get togethers so it is a great place to meet other small business owners and turn them into potential prospects.
I also tried BNI, but it wasn’t the right fit for me. While I've heard great things about it, my biggest challenge was attending their 7 AM meetings, especially with young kids at home. Additionally, they follow the exact same agenda at every meeting, which some people love, but it wasn’t for me. That said, I have friends and business colleagues who swear by it, so it’s definitely worth considering.
Sales was definitely the hardest part in starting my own business in HR. Ug! I am just not a salesperson. I did get help and I took some online courses to help me out. Here are some I highly recommend:
I took this course as it showed me how to place ads on FB and Instagram when I was selling my services as an HR online course to CA small businesses. I taught small business owners the most important employment laws and regulations they needed to know when they were starting a business. The course is called Powered by Passive and I learned a lot about placing ads.
I also highly recommend using Clickfunnels as a tool to sell your services. He offers a free training and it is one of the best ones I have taken. You can get a free 2 week trial and take the training while in that trial. I took the One Funnel Away Challenge (free).
For an HR audit, I will usually do this via Zoom and meet with the person that is responsible for the HR function at the company. We will then spend time going through each section. Their current employee handbook is very helpful to make sure they are compliant but I also want to know the processes behind the policies in the handbook. Just as an FYI - I usually charge $1500 - $2500 for an HR audit and the corresponding report (depending on the size of the company). For reference, I usually don't work with companies that have more than 75 employees.
At some point, you’ll likely encounter a client who resists your advice, disregards legal requirements, or is simply challenging to work with. Here's a case study from my experience on how I handled such a situation. It's important to note that I’ve had to part ways with clients in the past due to their refusal to follow compliance advice. Always make sure to document all communications to protect yourself. When advising clients, I provide guidance but leave the final decision to them, which ensures you safeguard your interests as a consultant.
When you're just starting out, scaling might not seem like a top priority, but it's essential to structure your business in a way that allows for easy growth down the line. I learned this early in my own journey and made a point to keep it in mind as I expanded my services for clients. The beauty of running your own business is that you have the freedom to choose your path. If you're content operating as a solo consultant, that's perfectly fine. If you decide to grow your business, you have the flexibility to make that happen as well.
I would love it if you could leave a comment for me. Any feedback on the course? Anything you want me to add? Since you have access to this course for life, I can add new modules and you will be able to view them. I also appreciate you leaving any reviews for future students. I take all comments seriously and will take them into considerations for future modules and lessons in the course. Thank you!
Are you an HR professional ready for something more? Maybe you’ve spent years supporting everyone else, writing policies, coaching managers, navigating compliance issues, and being the person who keeps it all together, yet you still feel stuck, underpaid, and overworked. You’ve built a career helping others succeed, but somewhere along the way, you started wondering, When is it my turn?
If you’ve ever dreamed of working for yourself, setting your own hours, choosing the clients you actually enjoy, and getting paid what your expertise is worth, this course is for you.
From HR Pro to Fractional Consultant teaches you how to take the HR skills you already have and turn them into a profitable consulting business or side hustle. Whether your goal is to leave your corporate job entirely or start small on the side, this course gives you a clear, proven roadmap for building a sustainable HR consulting business, from your first idea to your first paying client and beyond.
Why This Course Exists
Most HR professionals don’t realize how valuable their experience truly is. You’ve spent years solving problems that businesses struggle with every day, including hiring, compliance, employee relations, performance management, and culture. Those same skills can easily translate into your own consulting business, giving you both freedom and stability.
The challenge is that no one teaches HR professionals how to make that transition. There has never been a real “HR to Consultant” guidebook — until now.
I created From HR Pro to Fractional Consultant to fill that gap. This course is not theory or fluff. It is the exact process I used to leave corporate HR, build my own thriving consulting firm, and create a career that gives me flexibility, income, and purpose.
What Makes This Course Different
This course is taught by someone who has walked the same path you are considering. After more than 20 years in HR leadership roles at companies such as Starbucks and Amazon, I left the corporate world to build my own business, TruckeeHR, a successful California-based consulting firm that continues to grow today.
Unlike generic business or entrepreneurship courses, this program is built specifically for HR professionals. Every lesson, example, and worksheet speaks your language and shows you how to turn your HR expertise into valuable consulting services that businesses need and will pay for.
You will get real-world guidance from someone who still consults every day, not just theory from a classroom.
