Hello and WELCOME!
Here’s a bit more information about the course and what you need to do to get the most from it.
Let’s talk about breathing. Where do we breath for singing?
In this first lesson we’re going to talk about the difference between breathing for speaking and breathing for singing, and why it’s so important to get it right.
Don’t get stressed about this guys, and don’t overthink it. Overthinking can cause tension which we don’t want for singing.
Struggling to find the right place to breathe? Lie down on your back and relax. Let your breathing regulate and focus on where the breath is going.
Now we know how we should be breathing for singing, let’s give it a go. This is a great exercise to practise every day (yes – every day!). You’ll engage the right support and increase your stamina and breath capacity each time you practise.
If you find you’re getting a little light headed during this exercise – don’t panic. Your body isn’t used to breathing so deeply and taking in so much oxygen for an extended time. As you practise this, your body will adjust to the new levels of oxygen and you won’t feel so light headed.
Don’t forget to keep a glass of water handy and sit down if you need to.
Now you’ve practised breathing for singing, you know what that sensation is and you know how to practise at home – let’s connect it to some actual singing.
Now we’re going to try lip trills. They’re MAGIC. Honestly – if you do no other exercise but lip trills you’ll still hear a difference in your voice.
The lip trill uses a very small amount of the vocal cord but it requires you to activate the breath (and support it properly).
If you can’t seem to get the lip trilling, try pushing your cheeks in and forward to stick out your lips, or try rolling the tongue at the same time!
Now we’ve done the lip trill, let’s actually sing on a nice, open aaahh vowel.
Here’s what you need to focus on:
You can do it!
Let’s talk about resonance! What on earth is it? Why is it important for singing? What’s it got to do with guitars?
Creating a big open space is ideal for optimum vocal resonance.
The key to this rich, open tone? Lifting your soft palate!
Now let’s apply that lifted soft palate to the AAH exercise. Remember we’re not worrying about our tone here – just supporting the sound and creating a nice, open space.
TENSION IS THE ENEMY OF SINGING!
Life is hard. We hold tension in many parts of our body, often without realising. This is bad news for singing, my friends.
Before we get on to some exercises for relieving tension, I’ve got a big tip which will help your singing…
In this lesson I’m giving you some weird and wonderful exercises to help you get rid of tension.
If you notice you’re starting to strain as you sing STOP, do one of these exercises, take a breather and start again. The key to effortless singing is an absence of tension
Let’s see how we get on applying that relaxed state to some singing.
As always – we’re not focusing on a nice vocal tone here – we want to see how well we can coordinate a use of the vocal cord with elimination of any tension.
We wouldn’t usually sing like this of course, but once you can find the sensation of the melting face it will be easier to spot tension as you sing, and get rid of it.
Think about your favourite artist. Were they born with their talent? Probably not!
Time to stop comparing yourself to singers who’ve most likely had years of training and practise to grow and develop their vocal skill.
You are brilliant. And you’re doing a great job.
BONUS HOMEWORK TASK
WRITE DOWN ONE THING YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR SINGING. MAYBE YOU’RE GOOD AT FINDING HARMONIES. PERHAPS YOU HAVE A GOOD VOCAL RANGE. MAYBE YOUR TONE IS SMOOTH AND SWEET OR YOU CAN DO POP RUNS LIKE A PRO.
WRITE IT DOWN, PIN IT UP AND LET’S CELEBRATE OUR GOOD QUALITIES!
Here’s a great strategy for your practise time:
Breath Activation Exercise (5 mins)
Vocal Warm Up/Development – Lip Trills (5 mins)
Skills growth (specific technique exercises) (5-10 minutes)
Song Work (5-10 minutes)
REMEMBER – AT EACH STAGE YOU CAN STOP. JUST BREATH ACTIVATION IS BETTER THAN NOTHING AT ALL. BUT DON’T SKIP AHEAD BEFORE COMPLETING ALL THE PREVIOUS SECTIONS.
Little and often, practise makes perfect. It’s true!
Keep going and you’ll make great progress I just know it

You’ll learn techniques to help you:
“It works!! After 20 years of not having the confidence to sing in front of ANYONE (I now feel silly saying that!), I completely can. I can glide through those tough notes without having to stop singing, I can sing louder and prouder, and the breathing exercises soon became natural.” - Free Your Voice student.
