Students will learn about the 3 parts of the flute, how to assemble the instrument before playing, and how to properly hold the flute to avoid bad playing habits or injury.
By the end of this lecture, students will know how to clean their instrument and how to keep their flute in the best playing condition.
Students will learn how to produce sound on the flute and practice with the headjoint first.
Students will practice and find out how to produce a good sound with the full construction of the flute.
By the end of this lecture, students will know how to play 3 foundational notes with the correct fingerings, allowing them the ability to start learning their first songs on the flute.
For those who do not already have a general music background, this lesson will teach you the basic rhythm concepts you need to understand and play flute music.
Tonguing on the flute is not an easy technique to learn, but by the end of this lecture, students should feel more comfortable and understand how to articulate on the flute.
By the end of this lesson, students will know how to play "Hot Cross Buns", a popular traditional tune, using the notes and concepts we learned previously.
In this lecture, students unfamiliar with the staff and the treble clef will learn how to read music in this way.
In this lecture, we will continue to discuss the staff and how it applies to the song "Hot Cross Buns" that we previously learned.
Students will know how to play notes Eb and F and get better at using all of the notes and rhythms they have learned thus far with a variety of exercises.
With the notes we have learned so far, students will discover what a scale is and be able to play the Bb pentascale.
By the end of this lecture, students will know how to play an arrangement of a classic theme, "Ode to Joy", from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Students will learn how to play notes G, A, and high Bb, along with the complexities of producing higher notes on the flute.
The full Bb major scale will become playable for students by the end of this lecture as well as the ability to play new songs.
Students will have a grasp on what dynamics are and the importance of dynamics in music. They will also know how to become better at conveying them on the flute.
Students will learn their last guided song, an excerpt of an original tune composed by Catriona for beginner flutists.
Students will know how to properly breathe and how to increase their lung capacity as a flutist.
By the end of this lesson, students will know how to properly tune their flute. Purchasing a physical tuner or downloading a tuning app is recommended.
Students will know how to use a metronome to improve their practice time by the end of this lecture. Purchasing a physical metronome or downloading a metronome app is recommended.
In this video, students will be able to practice all of the regular flute 101 exercises in a guided manner. The additional tonguing exercises are not included in this video.

In Flute 101 - A Starter Course, beginner flutists can learn and understand all the necessary basics to become a capable flutist who is ready to join a beginner level concert band or small ensemble. Returning players will also benefit, refreshing their knowledge and skills with guided instruction while avoiding bad habits. Despite the intimidating reputation surrounding the difficulties of the flute, students will find this course helpful and encouraging, demystifying these challenges and providing clear methods of practice.
Under the instruction of Catriona Ailts, a MN musician and UMN - Twin Cities graduate, students can expect to learn about a variety of topics necessary to learning a new woodwind instrument including the history, anatomy, care and maintenance, basic music theory, sound production, how to play basic notes and scales, tonguing, reading music off of the music staff, how to learn new songs, practice, and much more. Students will receive detailed instruction that not only covers the general music knowledge, but how these topics pertain to the flute and the necessary technique to achieve success as a beginner flute player.
Flute 101 - A Starter Course is taught by Catriona Ailts, a private music teacher and composer from MN with over 7 years of teaching experience and more than 15 years of flute experience. Catriona designed this course to help prepare young musicians and returning adult musicians to join a concert band or small ensemble as she believes community and creating music for a purpose makes learning more meaningful and fun.
After completing the course, students will feel confident and inspired to continue their flute journey with patience and resilience all while enjoying the process.
